Sneaky Way Woolies Milk More Money? or Just a Misprint

Was browsing Woolworths' weekly catalogue and came across this rather "fair" hot cross buns (HCB) deal.

i) why would fruitless HCB be priced the same as the usual HCB?

ii) why would fruitless HCB be priced the same as the Cadbury chocolate HCB?

Lastly, if you know what the price is for the Hot Cross Loaf, please leave a comment. I'd be interested to know if it's just another way for Woolies to charge you more for a fruit loaf with cross on top.

…came across this rather "fair" hot cross buns (HCB)

Seriously, we're not even a week into the new year and they're advertising hot cross buns already?

They probably shouldn't even bother taking down the Christmas decorations and just leave it for the next Christmas.

Hot Cross buns are delicious. We can eat them 12 months a year.

      • Don't get me wrong - I like eating them too! Just saying that they're traditionally made for Easter and we're not even close right now.

        (I'm not religious either!)

Unlike Christmas decorations, hot cross buns go stale after a couple of days. They wouldn't be baking them if people weren't buying them.

          http://www.missfoodwise.com/2013/03/hot-cross-buns-through-p…

"The pagan Saxons would bake cross buns at the beginning of spring in honour of the goddess Eostre – most likely being the origin of the name Easter. The cross represented the rebirth of the world after winter and the four quarters of the moon, as well as the four seasons and the wheel of life."

          Halloween is Celtic Pagan:

Now you have idiotic wannabe fundamentalist keyboard warriors getting worked up (not here but all sort sort of forums), over Coles selling buns.

Coles were calling them Boxing Day hot cross buns. I assume these are now New Years hot cross buns and we'll shortly have Australia Day hot cross buns. They're a year round thing now, they just tack on whatever the recent holiday/event is.

Personally I don't see the attraction and never used to buy them even when they were a Easter only thing. People obviously buy them though or they wouldn't be available year round now.

    • Went to Coles today. Easter eggs already!

      • +1

        You mean 'round chocolate'.

        • Maybe the correct term is ovoid chocolate. Eggs aren't round, they're ovoid.

      • With the current weather and how that affects chocolate, i do not know why people would bother with Easter eggs etc at the moment.

Back in the day the store i worked at did not have a/c out the back and they were up high on the top shelves out of the way, they were a nuisance.. the heat would possibly wreck them..

Do you go ‘Make me a Big Mac, hold the onion but make sure to charge me less’ at Macas?
You could always make the loaf yourself if you think they’re charging too much.

    • For the sake of constructive argumentation, without malice, I wonder if it would be okay to ask Macas to keep their Wagyu burger priced the same as their regular beef burger? Or ask the Vic Metro to charge you the same when you're only traveling one stop, as opposed to the guy next to you that travels to Lilydale?

Oh yes, they're already doing that.

  • They used to charge more for fruitfree. It’s a premium option.

I agree with you OP … it's an absolute outrage.

If I was you, I would complain to the ACCC.

    • Don't stop there. This is class action territory.

    Loaf is $3.50 online, https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/74279/wool…

Probably about the same instore I imagine

    • Thanks for the heads up ;)

Make them by all means, but just don't put the cross on them… surely that would settle the people that get up in arms over it

      Hot Crossless Buns?

      • +1

        Not Cross Buns

  • +1

Coles sell their fruit, fruitless and chocolate chip hot cross buns for the same price as well. I think more people would complain if they weren’t the same price.

Also it says the loaf is $3.50 in the catalogue “$3.50 Hot Cross Varieties Pk 6-9 or Loaf”.

In the old days most bakeries used to sell fruit buns. The only difference between them was that they stuck a flour and water cross on them for a couple of weeks before Easter, then went back to normal fruit buns.

But, fruit buns seem to have disappeared from bakeries nowadays. People didn't want them I guess so they stopped making them, but now people are going apeshit over "hot cross buns". Really! The world really is going mad, but I blame Scott Morrison for that, he has dumbed down society :-)

  • holy shit i cant believe there's people who give a (profanity) about hot cross buns being available earlier than whatever nonsense religious holiday it's supposed to be associated with. they're delicious and i'm all for them being available every single day of the year

    • They certainly don’t put them out coz no one’s buying them.

      • for sure, wonder if the artificial scarcity helps.
