What's The Best Price for a 512GB Micro SD Card at The Moment?

Hi! I'm trying to upgrade my 256GB micro sd card on my switch to a 512 but I can't seem to find any good deals on at the moment. Best price I saw was a couple of months ago for $100. Does anyone know of where the best price to get a decent genuine one that offers good speeds? I'm used to samsung EVO but don't really mind on the brand.

  • Are you dead set on 512gb? I don't see too many deals on that whereas 400gb seems to have had a few deals around the $69 mark recently.

    • Yeah I've seem 400GB ones for quite a bit less but I buy a lot of swtich games digitally so need as much space as I can get.

      • Fair enough. I only ask because I thought the jump to get up to 512gb from 400gb was disproportionate (but I didn't calculate it out so could be wrong).

I also buy quite a lot from eShop but my 200GB card has been more than sufficient up to now… and I've learnt my lesson not to buy too many digital games if I want to trade in/resell in future since once you wipe your console, they become instantly worthless. (I mean we all know that and think the convenience factor is great, but it's still heartbreaking to know you've literally wiped them and can't even give them away)

        • +1

Good points, I've bought too many switch games haha.

  • Just a quick Q re. these cards - does anyone use them as extra storage on their computer? And if so, are they likely to be reliable?

I only have a 512GB drive on my home computer and it's very pricey to upgrade it (e.g. $600 or more - welcome to the world of the iMac. Perhaps an SD card could help.

    • I think it depends on what you want to put on them. I don't think they'd be super great for video editing or pc gaming but for just storing files and general use it would probably be completely fine. Might need to look into this more as I've not tried to use on on a computer longterm.

    • No way I'd cripple my system by using a mSD as 'live' storage.

Buy an external SSD if you need additional fast storage.

  • Don’t buy Lexar ones. Had two 512gb ones from ninja.buy on eBay fail, wont format, made phone run super hot. Ninja.buy not responsive in refunding after two failed cards so I assume they are aware of the issues with the cards they sell. I suspect they may be fake but others online also have problems with Lexar so maybe it’s just bad service from ninja.buy

    • Can't you initiate a chargeback? Do a format test on all big microSD cards you buy and also, at least try to fill it up with more than 32GB of data, as most fake ones use 32GB.

Fake microSDs work like this, they reprogram the controller which reports the vendor ID and other information to the OS like capacity. It will work normally until it reaches its actual limit, like if they used a 32GB to make the 512GB card. Then it will perform normally for the first 32GB, once you try to put more than that on there, it will either re-write the previous data, or just show up but those files put on after 32GB will just not work, they will show up in the file list, but when you go to open them, it wouldn't work.

I think scammers use 32GB because its a happy medium, it takes most people alot of time to fill it up to that point, so they'd be happy until it fails, and when it does, they'd be out of the chargeback period, very very bad.

That's why whenever I purchase a card more than 128GB in capacity, I do a format as well as fill it up at least 80% and test the files to make sure its not fake.
