JB Hi-Fi Doesn't Allow to Type Card Number and Pin from Physical Gift Card for Payment

I bought some JB Physical Gift Cards from a nice gentleman here . He is from other city so I received the cards number and pins via text message. Today when I was in MQ JB tried to make payment, the cashier said they not allowed to type in the card number and pin . I will neet to show the physical gift cards to make payment. Is this true with every JB?

Do you know any of the JB will let me use the photo cards?

Thank you.

Buy it instead on their website and select instore pickup?

Use them online to buy an e-gift card, then print that out

Or just use them online to buy what you want

You'll need to buy 5 gift cards to get your $2300 amount as there's a $500 limit

Can you use gift cards to pay for e-gift cards? In the past I know they didn't allow it at JB, and that's still commonly the case at other stores. But not sure about JB.

      • +3

Yep, have been able to for years online

Can't convert in-store, but can easily online. I used to regularly do it to combine $5 egift cards into bigger denominations

Must be in store that I tried previously. Thanks for the tip regarding online.

  • You sure this isn't a scam? Why not use them to buy online?

    • I have a $50 card it’s hard to buy something for $50 and you can’t do split payments online

      • can’t do split payments online

        Since when?

I ordered dvds paid with gift card remaining funds and the rest with credit card but this was early 2018.

Not a direct answer to your question, but an idea you could try. If you put the numbers in to one of the various apps that help store/manage egift cards, it displays the barcode. I'm not sure if the store will know that the numbers came from a physical gift card rather than egift card, so it might work. I use Google Pay for example. Stocard is another popular choice in Australia.

And if you're not trying to negotiate a price in store, you could also try buying online and do click and collect.

  • So OP you didn't end up doing a face to face transaction.

$2300 is a lot of money to conduct such a risky type of transaction.

  • Uh oh

Thank you for everyone's input. $2300 is what I am after but the amount is much less than it. I am buying few different items for my sister from overseas and JB gave a little discount in store. I am trying to use them online to buy an e-gift card(jbhifi.com.au), then print that out.

    Thank you guys.

They probably don’t allow it cause (criminals steal credit card numbers)

I guess I’m the idiot in this situation, I’m the seller. And intend on refunding all the money paid.

I didn’t realise that the PIN is not required to use the actual gift cards. And unknowingly sent the card numbers to a buyer on gumtree.

Apparently physical gift cards cannot be claimed without the actual cards themselves. But seems like JB accepted photos of the card numbers only as payment.

I rang the Jb Hi-Fi Woden store where they were redeemed, they have my details. But I think this this is gonna be my loss, for JB’s lose policies. 😑

    • Wait so:

      • OP bought your cards
      • You also sent the card numbers to someone on Gumtree
      • OP tried to redeem but they've already been redeemed by Gumtree guy

      That the basics?

      • Again, it really occurred because of the misunderstanding of how these gift cards can be claimed. I didn’t realise that the pin number was basically useless, and you could use these gift cards without the pin number itself.

Yeah I would've thought the same :/ (though wouldn't have given out the number!)

          Sorry to hear :/

          • @spackbace: From the perspective of a buyer, they would want to check the balance remaining on the card. They would at least want to check that there is indeed the credit agreed.

            • +2

@RNDM: That is the only reason why I shared the card number. To allow the buyer to confirm that there is indeed the agreed amount on the card

              • @RNDM: Redeeming in-store at JB Hi-Fi

You must have your gift card with you to purchase at the cashier. JB Hi-Fi staff will swipe your card. If your gift card balance does not exceed the price of your purchase, you can pay the difference with a selected credit card or cash. Note: You CANNOT use your gift card email to purchase in-store. The actual gift card MUST be presented.

                https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/how-do-i-use-a-gift-card-to-…

So basically JB staff was at fault, don’t think this will help my situation any though .

                • +6

@RNDM: Are you telling me that someone can go photograph the back of JB gift cards on display at woolies, Coles and aus post, then redeem them when someone purchases and activates them , even if the pin is unscratched?

                  • @grasstown: Apparently … O.O

                    • @RNDM: I think it’s irrelevant that you shared the numbers.

You should only bear the cost if the other person guessed the pins, you should not bear the costs if JB did not require the pins.

                  • @grasstown: But you also need to find out when the photographed cards are activated to then use it yourself before the guy who bought them at the counter….which means you need a 24/7 camera…perferably one that can see through solid objects so you can tell when someone picks up your card or cards and then goes to the counter to activate them an then BAM, you use them right after it's activated and the buyer would call JB a scammer for selling a dud card….

                    • @Zachary: I hold on to my cards for months if not years. I assume others do too

                      • @grasstown: They're usable once they are activated at the register?

                    • @Zachary: Or you can set up a bot to query the balance check every couple of hours, which only starts to work once the card has been activated.

There's been many gift card scams run this way.

                      • @hamole: I suppose that would work too if you're computer inclined….

  • Basically

    Ruh roh…

  • Aw well, sent the money back to the OP.

    Now it's my headache ……..

This guy won't respond, and well should've raised flags if he's only been a member since 2019.

The selling history would raise flags!

  • Tbh fair enough, in case you stole it from somewhere

I can use e-gift cards at my local store, but they must photocopied your driver license

  • I think whoever had the card numbers and the PIN of the cards used that information on the JB-HiFi website to redeem them.
