Word of warning the pictures look like a small bag but 81cm is the largest size samsonite have in this range - definitely not carry on friendly

I got confused because i've only referred to smaller bags as spinners.

having the zip is fine for carry one but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing check-in for a zip-seam bag.

    • +5

Spinner is used to describe the layout of the wheels (4 wheels) as opposed to rollers (2 wheels).

      • yep, just learned that today after using them for 25+ years

          Lol are you serious

          • @miq: yeah, I just called suitcases, suitcases and assumed a swinger was just the smaller carry on size version. (or a very friendly neighbour ;-) )

No idea why. anyway for some reason I got negged for the honesty . go figure

how does the picture look like a small bag? cmon man.
it says 81 cm too lol.

  • just bought one, good deal esp with free shipping. thanks OP.

  • Any deals on the smaller carry on ones?

Is this too big for international flights with Qantas??

    • +1

Yes, by a far bit (110mm linear to be exact). Hardly anyone checks this though at check-in but I wouldn't risk it personally. Also, 4.5kg is quite heavy for a suitcase. They're a good product though, I'd go for 1 or 2 sizes smaller.

      • Thanks, best not to risk it!
Looking for a large size suitcase - probably 75cm. Deciding between an Antler or Samsonite one (depending on price). But not many good deals with 75cm

    • Yep, too big.
I would have bought it if it was the right size!

    • Except China southern airline, rest of airlines departing from Oz are all ok with 81cm checkin.

      • +1

Flown anumber of airlines with 81cm luggage. All they cared about was if i meet the weight limit.

        • Did these include Scoot or Jetstar international?

      • This is incorrect. Linear restrictions are on most etickets of most airlines, have personally checked Singapore Airlines and Korean Air recently.

        • Is this what you mean?

          From Scoot Checked Baggage info:
For each checked baggage, the sum of the length, width and height should not exceed 158cm (62 inches)

This Octolite is 169cm by those measurements so should be rejected if checked - anyone experienced this?

  • do these roll any faster than other colours? 🧐

I have one in a smaller size and would rate it 3.5 stars purely based on price/quality (I got mine from these guys as well last year). Don’t buy it if you mind scratches. For some of the other raised issues with broken handles, you just get it repaired under warranty (which is less of an issue for those in metro areas close to Samsonite repair shops).

  • Hi Rep,

Just wondering if you have any deals on the 81cm Antler Juno 2?

  • Any deals on the 75cm versions 81cm is too large for me?

  • +1

Recommend Samsonite 72 Hours DLX 78cm LIGHTWEIGHT EXPANDABLE SPINNER. Got me around Europe for 6 weeks. The important part is the wheels and weight - here 2.8 kg. You can get it for $229 at discount-luggage-warehouse on eBay, which is where I got it. Even this is possibly little big and one size down 71cm is 2.4 kg.

Have got this exact same DLX model, as well as the Octolite and a Cosmolite. The DLX is fantastic if you don’t mind a softcase and the risk of stuff getting wet - the 78cm one is also just within the max size of allowed check-in luggage so the perfect size from that point of view. It’s also more convenient to ‘live out’ in small hotel room as all luggage is kept in one side. The only reason I got an Octolite is because of its price and dimensions (it fits nicely in one of my other suitcases). The Cosmolite has the best of both worlds: it’s light with the advantages of a hardcase (and doesn’t scratch) but it’s more than double the price of the DLX or Octolite.

      • Yes, looks good 2.6kg for 75 cm Cosmolite, very light for a hardcase. So you recommend it? But very poor ratings on Product Review, through. I am planning my next purchase.

        • +1

Are there any suitcases on ProductReview with positive ratings? I believe it's one of those products people only review when something goes wrong. Wheels are a bit of a problem though and I don't like Samsonite's policy here either - I travel a lot and also had to have wheels replaced by a local service centre, including for my Cosmolite (they did it under warranty after I refused to pay for it).

          • @bozbargain: Ironically, my Cosmolite came back with a wheel missing (again!) earlier this week after another international flight.
