    Worst movie ever made.

I assume the deal is that they are paying you $20 to take it.

    • +2

Amazed how many people can't handle a slow movie.

      • +3

I wouldnt say worst movie, but it was nothing special. And definitely not worth $20. I probably wouldn't even want to watch it again for free.

      • A movie is only "slow" if it's boring.

You can have a film with no action in it, and it be all talking and still the time passes quickly. That's because you were engaged in the film. It was intelligent and made you think. Or it was funny.

Most of my favorite films are this kind of film. I'm no action fan.

If you found the movie slow, it's because it wasn't interesting.

        • Problem is, this movie was slow and boring. I like sci-fi and thrillers. I’m not much of an action fan and like my movies to be interesting, well paced with a twist at the end.

Ad Astra was just painful with a WTF, and not is a good way, ending.

          • @pegaxs: Definitely agree. I love sci-fi and knew nothing about this movie going in (the way I like to watch movies) and was bored for most of the movie. At the end we all said what a waste of time. If I’d been watching it by myself I probably would have ffwd for a lot of it.

    • +1

If you were hoping for a action-sci-fi adventure film, this isn't it. It's very heavily influences by Apocalypse Now. So the same advice would go for that film. If you're looking for an action hero big explosion war film, Apocalypse Now is not the film for you.

      • +1

i wasn't looking for an action film.

I wanted something closer to Interstellar, a drama.

This was just full of stupidity. Firing a gun on your space ship is a bad idea if it didn't occur to you. You could puncture a hole in your ship. Especially if you hit a window. The guy ends up shooting a fire extinguisher which then goes haywire, bounces around the room and kills him.

And for some reason, people who die in space get thrown out of the airlock as a form of sending off. It means you can commit murder and dispose of the evidence legally.

    • +1

Best movie made last few years I reckon. Apocolypse Now in space was great.

    • +2

so this is literally the worst movie ever made?

    • agreed. Watching the trailer, I was so looking forward to it but it was pretty bad.

Not the worst movie ever made, but probably the worst space movie I've seen.

    • Came here to say the same thing. I made the mistake to listen to reviews and went and saw it at the cinema.

Talk about drag on and on and on. It was the most anticlimactic movie I have seen in forever.

This isn’t really a deal unless you are looking for what’s the best way to wast $20 and 2 hours of your time in the one go.

    • Worst movie ever made.

Some Z grade movies beg to differ.

  • +1

    Don’t hold back now

  • +13

Ad Astra. A stupid movie that's stupidly stupid because its stupid.

    • No need to beat around the bush and sugar coat what you think of this movie. Now try again. Dont hold back this time.

  • +4

Being serious here. Is it really that bad?

    • +5

It feels very dragged out and slow pace throughout the film.

    • +4

I don't even know what the purpose of the movie was.

      • +4

        Father issues.

Relationship of a son and his father.

      • +2

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE

its a pretty obvious allegory for a challenging father-son relationship (distant father causes shockwaves that affect his son's world, son overcomes a series of metaphorical barriers (pirates, hell, high water, other people) to reconcile with his father. Son has spent his whole life purposely and accidentally following in his son's footsteps, realises he does not have to be his father and can break the cycle.

A little clumsy but, you know, it was OK.

        • and when they finally meet, the meeting was a huge letdown.

    • I haven't seen it yet but critics say it will be a space cult classic. Don't know? We shall find out in the future then.

    • +1

A slow movie that relies on the nuanced facial expressions of its lead actor to carry it, but went with a lead actor who could not do nuanced. I like Pitt, but nuanced facial expressions aren't his thing, in Once upon a time in Hollywood he was fantastic.

    • +8

beautiful cinematography let down by try hard nonsensical plot, comedic elements (space antennas, space pirates, rabid space baboons etc)

      • don't over sell it with cool words like "space baboon". it was a very short scene and had no impact on the plot whatsoever.

it got nowhere fast and ended in the most unbelievably annoying way.
Was he arrested ? does he die from radiation of the blast? i'd usually care for these things to be answered but honestly at that point I was just glad the movie was over.

        • +1

he obviously wasn't arrested if you saw the ending. And he obviously didn't die.

          • @lostn: I know, kind of unbelievable for a traitor

            • @ndftz: yeah I don't know how he got off scot free from it.

You can argue the deaths were not his fault or were in self defense, but sneaking onto the ship was definitely an illegal act, and had he not done that the deaths wouldn't have occurred. But maybe they were just grateful he stopped the EMPs and looked past it.

    • +1

      Na, it's actually good

      • The more negative comments on the movie actually makes me want to watch it!

Many movies in the past were actually initially panned by critics but have ended up being classics.

But, I think I will wait til it is in the bargain bin, lol.

        • +1

This one was actually very well reviewed by critics. 84% on rotten tomatoes.

The people that hate it probably went in expecting it to be something it's not. It's a slow burn thats very character focused. It's story really doesn't even need to be set in space, so space is not the focus of the movie which is why the average movie goer may not have liked it.

If you're a movie person that doesn't just watch the blockbusters and can handle a slow movie, then I think youll like it. It is a beautiful looking movie and Brad Pitt is excellent.

          • +1

@ScruffTheJanitor: Thanks for your considered comments. I don't usually take others opinions re movies seriously and do make my own mind up. My initial post was meant to be light hearted and to get a discussion going.

Generally in the past most movie critics are so wrong. eg; Terminator, Predator et al were widely panned, but these movies are now regarded as classics by the same critics.

On the other hand, movies such as Remains of the Day and The English Patient etc which were loved by critics are just unwatchable bilge.

A lot of people dislike The Predator, Ex Machina, Gravity, Evolution etc which I think are great movies.

And a quote from David Lee Roth,

“Music critics like Elvis Costello because music critics look like Elvis Costello”

Same applies with movies I think, lol.

          • +1

            @ScruffTheJanitor: SPOILERS

Tell me how it is you can determine that there is no life out in the universe? And how can you make that determination from Neptune, a place within the solar system? No scientist worth their salt could ever make a conclusion like that.

There are galaxies out there whose light have yet to even reach us and will never reach us. How can you from this far away know that there is no life in that galaxy? And each galaxy has hundreds of billions of stars btw. With each star having planets.

They somehow determined there was no life out there. And it only took a matter of years. We have been distributing evidence of our existence through radio waves and TV for about 100 years. That's how far our signals have gone, traveling at the speed of light — ~100 light years. If you zoom out of our galaxy far enough that the entire galaxy fits on your TV screen, our communications have not even moved a single pixel on your screen. Alien communication travels at the same speed. There's no way you could determine there's no life in our own galaxy, much less the trillions of galaxies out there.

If an alien species on the other side the milky way developed radio intelligence 64 million years ago (when the Dinosaurs last roamed the earth), their signals would still not have had enough time to reach us.

To give you an idea of the size of our own galaxy, if the sun was the dot on an "i" or "j", then the galaxy would be the size of the entire earth. The number of stars in the universe outnumber the grains of sand on all of earths beaches — by several orders of magnitude.

Brad's dad went mad because he discovered we are alone in the universe, and he was not glad.

The science in this movie is incredibly insulting.

            84% on rotten tomatoes.

The thing you need to understand about RT is that 84% is not the average rating for the movie.

A critic either considers a film fresh (60%+) or rotten. And the 84% is the percentage of critics who think it's better than 60% (i.e. average). As long as the film isn't horrendous, it's not hard to get a fresh rating on RT.

      • Na, it's actually good

As in so bad it's good?

    • +1

Nah.. nerds on the internet don't like it because it's not hard science, and I think that's where most of the noise is coming from.
Yes.. the science is a bit poor in spots, but it's not aiming for that.

In reality it's a space take on Heart of Darkness. Meaning it's more about a statement of human civilisation. But it has bit of a flaw in it's reasoning between the main character and his father and the 'human' bit (hard to explain without spoilers). It has it's flaws, but it's no where near as bad as the "internet" tells you it is. Just don't expect an action film, it's not what it is. But it's also not a Solaris either.

I didn't mind it, it's certainly no masterpiece, and there are certainly far better sci-fi films out there, but it's enjoyable enough.

It's probably stream worthy, and not worth a physical media buy.

      • I didn't expect or want an action film.

I just wanted a film that was intelligent and not boring.

Space films from the past decade that I liked: Interstellar, The Martian, Gravity, Sunshine. None of these were action films.

  • +3

This is equivalent to the $5 Anthem deals going around, this isn't worth $20, and even at $20 there are better movies you can buy.

    • O,g, yes, it is the Anthem of movies. :D

  • +1

Fantastic first hour or 90mins or so…then, well….

  • +3

Many critics loved it, but for the average person… dont waste your time.

    • +4

Critics really do look for different things. I don't know whether it is because they are arty, film elitists which draws them to becoming critics in the first place or whether they were just forced to watch a Fast & Furious marathon and a desperate for anything with a plot deeper than a petrie dish.

      • Those who can't do, teach,
        Those who can't direct, critic…

i have nothing against good teachers, but critics…

        • Is that 'critic' the verb?

  • +7

Its the dumbest space movie i've ever seen. its also incredibly slow , predictable and pretentious. Really horrible movie. Watch Interstellar instead or space 2001 instead.

    • +4

Yeh because 2001 isn't slow. Lmao

      • +1

Funnily enough 2001 was the movie that came to mind when I was trying to think what other movie was slow enough to make me want to stop watching it. This is worse.

  • +1

Such a bad movie…I wouldn’t watch it again if someone gave me $20.

  • +1

Some of the space/rocket/moon scenes are visually excellent. But it’s Hollywood space travel.

    • Did we have any other kind other than Hollywood's?!

  • +1

There's not a lot of 'space' in it. Like everyone said, it's a father-and-son-issue movie. The background, the whole space exploration wouldn't matter as much as if the dad was deep in mariana trench. Except he would definitely find a lot of new species down there.

  • In Hollywood's secret polling authority office there are different labels for different rankings. For instance, StupidoBasico for a poor movie or Extremostupido for a classic stupid movie that has no precedent. AdAstra is a classic.

  • Boring movie with good actors. Not worth $20.

  • I want 2 hours of my life back after watching this movie
