Suggestion for Motorcycle Insurances in NSW: AAMI, Swann, etc

**I couldn't find a motorcycle category!

Got rear-ended while waiting at the traffic light before Christmas, I flew like a bird and with a bit of huge luck I only lost my palm skin haha
I'm still without understand how he manages to do that which ended involving his Volkswagen Amarok and an Australia Post Office van as well, big sh1t.
100% sure he was way above the speed limit 50km/h and I suspect he was under influence of alcohol. He drove away before the cops arrived.

We exchanged details and I'll have to wait until next Monday to find out if the driver changed his story and blablabla
So far looking at the damage is worth $1.2k in genuine parts without including painting, etc.

The thing is, I changed my insurance plan from comprehensive to a third party only last year and I learned in the worst way that I made the most stupid mistake.
They won't do nothing if the guy decides to do nothing because I don't have the comprehensive one :(
As the cop at the Redfern Police Station said "he can do nothing if he wants, that is why you pay insurance for"
So far he seems to be taking the responsibility.

I am currently with AAMI but recently reading topis here I found out that AAMI seems to use the worst places to get things done so the same job has to be done twice or more and still pretty sh1t quality. Since it will expire soon it might be worth asking for suggestions.

A friend of mine rides a Harley which had a partnership with Swann and it is currently with QBE.
He had a great experience with Swann which after a damage worth $3k to his bike, got it covered without problems..
I was reading online reviews and I guess it was because of his Harley worth $6-7k or luck.

My 2013 Honda NC700SA with Swann is ~$500 for comprehensive while it is $1k with AAMI and NRMA.

If you are a rider, could you please share your experience?

Thank you guys

I'm with Swann and had good experiences with a recent claim. Someone attempted to steal my bike, but wasn't able to get it going. However they basically destroyed it in the process. They had it assessed and towed same week, with payout shortly after.

As for your situation, if he has full comprehensive (which as Auspost I would assume they all do?) and admits in writing he's at fault, you should be able to lodge a claim through his insurance to repair your vehicle - it just won't be as easy as having your own insurance. He can choose to do nothing to repair his own vehicle.

EDIT: Found this from a quick google https://www.finder.com.au/not-at-fault-car-insurance, see section 'I have no car insurance and someone hit me. What are my rights?'

I recently had a bike written off with QBE. The call, towing, inspection all happened within a few days, however it Has now been almost 6 weeks and have not received my payout. Would avoid QBE in the future.

Aus post is also self employed. Was it a contractor or Aus post employee? I wouldn't stress about not getting it fixed if it's corporate employee/van. They wb just ask you to get 3 quotes.

If you need more information about where he might possibly work out of, shoot me a pm

    • That sucks :(

He only got QBE this time for his Harley coz it seems like they are the new partnership with Harley and they have road assistance without paying more it.

I insure all my bikes with Shannons. They give you the option of put it down as limited riding if you only do weekend rides to save you some money.

Never had to make a claim through them, but every time I have had to make a change to my policy, I always speak to Australian call centre staff and they have always been very knowledgeable about motorcycles, not like speaking to some Filipino girl overseas.

  • Thank you for your comments guys.

I just updated the original post: He was driving a SUV Volkswagen Amarok which belongs to the company he works for. On an attempt to avoid hitting me in full, he ended hitting an Australian Post Office van that was in the other lane on the driver side. Mirror, door, everything got f***d.
He stopped between us, and if it wasn't a metal support I have covering the entire rear to load side bags, adios left arm and leg. It took the entire impact making me fly away from the SUV.

I'll wait next week to see what happens. In the very worse case scenario, I can fix the bike myself as I always keep it maintenanced by myself anyways so I can at least ride it while finding my rights. The main problem is that the ABS is gone, the break works but there's no ABS anymore. I can imagine what it could be but this is a subject for after next week :)

In regards to the insurance, I'll renew with Swann this time rather than AAMI, so far better service for half the price.

Thank you again guys for your time :)

    • No ABS? How did you diagnose that? Does you ABS light go out? Does it stay on?

Providing that it is failing, try all your fuses first. Then, if they are ok, check your ABS wheel sensors, as this is the most common issue for ABS faults on anything and bike sensors are pretty exposed.

Failing that, just go to a Honda dealer and get them to plug in and read any faults the ABS might have.

      • Yep, after 10km/s the ABS light has to turn off. If it doesn't something is off.
If I don't manage to find out, there's a forum for the Honda NC700 and they're pretty keen to help.

I got my brakes fixed with their help ages ago. My bike brake system has 2 valves and 3 cylinders at the front. The middle one works in parallel with the rear brake acting as a pre ABS before the ABS takes action, it brakes hard and I love it. I changed the brake pads and got air into the system but It took their help to understand it, it's a whole different process. It's not like 1 valve with 2 cylinders like usually. This weekend I'm off so I will do some checks to find out what is happening.

        Thank you.
