Are People Allowed to Wait for Right Turn at This Traffic Stop (When No Turn Right Is Flashing)?

I'm sometimes driving ahead in the right lane then there's a random halt.
So now I mostly drive through on the left side.

STREET VIEW

( The No-Right-Turn only turns off when Left arrow is green here )

Bonus question:
Where can I suggest improvements for Traffic lights? VRoads?
There's a T-intersection around there where it goes Green (right), but Red left arrow.

    What's my prize?

    • It just wouldn't be a traffic post without MS Paint making an appearance.

You are still allowed to turn right, you just risk a fine of failing to indicate.

Ironically in the Google image provided, the car waiting at the lights is not allowed to turn right due to the electronic no right turn signage.

      flashing No Right Turn lights

      What?

      • Allowed to turn right, assuming the No Right Turn sign isn't illuminated.

Are you allowed to wait at this traffic stop, flashing No Right Turn lights?

I would assume op is talking about when the No right turn lights are flashing/illuminated, as per title?

if its flashing, I cam time ur turn for when it's off, then it's ok

get the timing right and put the petal to the.metal

Just how sensitive is your throttle?

No brake lights and possibly not indicating so as far as we can tell not breaking any rules.

      • That's true.

I was just basing it on how far the traffic going the other way had advanced through the intersection, and that the traffic lights facing away from the photo are only single column wide that it doesn't have a turn arrow to offset the different directions.

  • The no right turn is time of day based. When the no right turn lights are illuminated you must not turn right. You have to follow all the other lights as well.

To be honest not really sure I understand your question.

    • +1

This particular one is not based on the time of day.
The only time it is NOT flashing is when Left turns go green here

"Are people allowed to wait for Right turn at this traffic stop?" More understandable?

      • What a sh!t intersection then. Probably some knee jerk reaction to someone who died there.

It makes sense: VicRoads has realised that allowing right turns for Chandler Rd traffic would cause congestion (on Chandler Rd).

Only Railway Pde traffic is allowed to turn right onto Douglas St (immediately after turning left onto Chandler Rd - in effect, continuing straight). This explains why the lights are only inactive when Douglas St traffic has a green left arrow. Since Chandler Rd traffic faces a red light during this phase anyway, it bears no effect on the amount of congestion on Chandler Rd.

  • If the no right turn lights are flashing, it means you cant turn right, therefore there's no good reason for cars to suddenly stop while lights to go forward are still green.

If the no right turn lights are not flashing, then cars can stop to wait and proceed with their right turn.

There's a T-intersection around there where it goes Green (right), but Red left arrow.

    ??? Maybe for pedestrians?

    • ??? Maybe for pedestrians?

      Funnily enough, it's this T-intersect

Which is weird. I'm stopping to turn left with a red arrow, but green light = the whole right lane turning right, nothing else is happening, would make sense to allow left turns same time.

edit: The train also runs overhead now.. Now thinking about it, maybe the Traffic procedure was modified during construction, and they've forgotten to revert!

      • +1

I don't think that the traffic lights were modified during construction - they're probably just still in the original configuration which accounts for the (now removed) level crossing.

It's likely that Hanna St (parallel on other side of tracks) has a green light during the phase you describe. This means that left turning traffic from Railway Pde will immediately face a red light once on Chandler Rd anyway. To avoid drivers queuing across the tracks, the traffic is given a red arrow at the T-intersection instead.

VicRoads could reconfigure the intersection based on the removal of the level crossing but you wouldn't get through the entire junction any faster if Hanna Rd does indeed have a green light in this phase.

Turning right is a waste of time, I always drive further up road then turn left three times…

    • I guess that's the southern hemisphere version of this

  • What do you mean by 'are you allowed to wait?' If the light is red, you must wait behind the line. When the no right turn sign is activated (edit: based on phase), you can't turn right. Otherwise, you can turn right from the right lane (in accordance with the traffic lights).

As for the T-intersection, it's likely that the phase allows for pedestrians to cross on the left. Alternatively, if there's another set of traffic lights immediately on the left, the left arrow may be synchronised to it.

If the "No Right Turn" light is illuminated, no.
If the "No Right Turn" light is off, yes.

Is this sign on all the time? Is it only certain times of the day. Is this even relevant to the time of day you are using the road? There is so little info to go on.

If someone is stopped there waiting for a break in traffic so they can turn right, but the sign ahead is lit up and saying "No Right Turn", they could be in breach of Aus. Road Rule 125 Unreasonably obstructing drivers or pedestrians. Outside that, suck it up and wait or just change lanes and go around them.

Edit: Didn't press "post" and got roped into something else for the wife. Came back, pressed post and saw that the post now has more information…

Read your edit as "got groped by the wife" 🤣

  • No. Poll required. You need to read the signs and lights.

There! Fixed it for you :)

Looking at the intersection, I would say they've put the no right turn sign in to prevent people waiting there which would result in cars queuing over the train tracks.

  • I've never seen a lit up "no right turn" sign in NSW. Must be a VIC thing.

What are you talking about… how can you mainly use left lane…. it only goes left…. and right lane only goes right
