note: Code is generic and can be used without JB Hifi account.

I know a lot of people bag Swann, but I’ve got an older version and it works for me. Not sure about the spotlights but if it suits you… Interestingly tests I’ve seen show lower res cameras work better at night.

  • I would be interested in any real world feedback on this, so any input would be appreciated. We are building a house this year and I'm considering installing this product.

As far as I understand the cameras can run off POE? What are the downsides of this product?

    Cheers, Anthony

    • Check out the comments the last time this deal was posted

    • Yeah camera quality is rubbish as per a lot of comments.

    • I am in the process of building and have looked into Swann among other brands for home security, I was looking for x4 POE cameras and a NVR. Don't get hung up about "4K" - it's a con and gimmick the way people think the more megapixels a camera has, the better it is.

What's more important is the camera/lense quality, focal length, support and warranty. Swann are the lowest level cameras and probably suit most consumer homes but don't expect them to last the distance. I won't bore you with all the research, google can do this for you :o)

I end up going with HIK Vision, does cost a little more though. I'm not saying they are the best nor do I recommend, it was simply the best for me in MY circumstances.

      • Where did you buy your HKV Vision gear?

        • +1

eBay, but stay away from the Chinese import products which are "OEM". Stick with sellers who sell Australian stock otherwise you will have issues with firmware updates and support/warranty.

    • +1

I believe these are BNC not POE - just going by the pics.

I have a preference for POE because my house already has a network I can tap into.

As other commenters have stated, don't expect the world from this - there are better quality but ya gets what ya pays for.

I've had a Swann 4MP POE system for about three years now and it works a treat. The motion detection is not great and I get a lot of false readings from moths and moving plants, but having worked with high-end security cameras, even they have their moments. (Those cameras each cost about 5-times what I paid for my whole system).

I'm not a Swann fan-boy and will probably go for something different when this dies, but the picture I am looking at right now on my 24 inch monitor is pretty good.

    • Thanks for the input guys… I'll have to keep looking I guess. The price point of this Swann product seems attractive, hence my interest. I'll keep doing my research, but this was a good starting point.

      • This is a great camera system. Unsure what others are talking about. I personally have it and have recommended to all of it.
None of my friends have any issues, infact few other that has Hikvision cameras says ours is better in terms of quality.

The app notifications is a bit of hit and miss though.
But I personally like that if you ran into an issue, you can call Swann support where as you're deserted (IMO) with Hikvision as you would only have support from the camera re-seller or installer.

The only thing about Swann that is incredible is their marketing. They should be used as the number one example that you can make a crappy product, charge a premium price and still be in business for decades.

  • +1

Don't use these for thermal detection , as soon as it's a hot day which we get plenty of in Australia they keep flagging motion detected when it's just the heat on any surface. Would be good if it was indoor or warehouse setting

  • +2

Swann own the retail market, but installers and security firms would not touch them with a 10 foot pole
    they are cheap overpriced rubbish.
The only thing Swann is good at is … Marketing

    • any recommendations to what installers use?

      • I work as a security tech for a large security company as well as do installs on weekends, we use 3 for residential installs that are highly regarded in Australia and that's dahua, risco and Tiandy.
But whichever you chose, stick to poe, less troublesome as a whole.

  • +1

    Another option is Dahua.
    Similar quality to hikvision.
    I built a system with 4 cams (6mp poe) 8 channel nvr with 4tb for around $1k.
I have since added another 3 cams. Very flexible.

  • Everything looks perfect from outside but when you purchase the item, you're stuck and customer service is a nightmare!
I purchased my DVR 8 channels back in March 2019 and still struggling with them!
They're not responsive most of the times and My DVR (DVR8-4580V) still not working after almost a year (I've spent hours communicating via email and phone to resolve the issues)!

Hard disk fails every few days and remote access disconnects; you have to reset the system physically (I do it 3 times a week for a year)!
Thermal detection keeps flagging motion detected when it's just the heat on any surface!
Manual detection selection not working and detects everything inside/ outside of selection!
What's more to tell about this product and of course SWANN?!

I never recommend it to anyone!

  • I would like to share my opinion and see if anyone agrees/disagrees with me.

What's the point of purchasing a camera that is hard drive based when a burglar can just break into your home and steal it (versus a cloud based solution).

I would love to hear other people's opinions on this issue

    • I agree with your comments however cost is the major prohibitive factor for cloud based due to 1.Speed/bandwidth required to upload 2.ongoing maintenance fees for cloud storage or service to explicitly upload

For consumer applications, I believe the recommended cost effective way around this is to have a DVR to record (keep in plain site) and NVR to copy/store videos (keep this one hidden). Burglar/thief is not usually techno savvy to look for 2 units.

    • Some people decide to have the NVR remain in the roofspace, not great for heat, but with a home break in not many are going to think of getting a ladder and finding the manhole.

  • It was a toss up between hikvision and Google/ring cameras for me.
Hikvision is good for quality and recording but I went down the Google route (Nest Outdoor IQ) purely for smarts as it's got facial detection.
