Do You Find Having a Pen / Stylus Useful on a Laptop?

Thinking about getting the Dell Inspiron 7000 Black edition with a stylus / pen garage right inside it. (https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/2-in-1-laptops/new-inspiron-…) - just waiting on a good sale.

Just wondering, do you guys find a stylus useful?

If so, what do you use it for? The only real use I can think is if I print screen, I can kind of draw over the printscreen.

Do you recommend getting a laptop with a touch screen? Do you find yourself actually touching the touch screen?

If you can't think of how you'll use it, you won't. You might consider it to take notes/draw diagrams if you're a student but otherwise don't spend extra to have a feature you won't use.

Keep in mind that convertible laptops in tablet form are nowhere near as practical as iPads because of the extra bulk and weight.

    • good point.

What about just having a touch screen though?

      • Scrolling and pinch to zoom are honestly the only real uses I've found for a touchscreen on a laptop (not tablet).

      • I used to have a convertible laptop and rarely used the touchscreen in laptop form. Windows simply isn't optimised for touch.

      • depends on your job or what you do with laptop.
my company's laptop is a touchscreen and it's annoying.

I use the touch screen all the time on my laptop, and find it really annoying when using my work one and it doesn't have it. I had a stylus when I used to have a Surface Pro and only used it a couple of times, can't say I found any use for it really (same went for the one Samsung Galaxy Note that I had).

Touch screen for scrolling is awesome compared to trackpad.

  • I have a 2-in-1 tablet/surface clone lenovo miix 700 and I do use the touchscreen for low powered games which support it and done some readings in pdf with the touchscreen, when I think about it, I do mostly use the touchscreen for scrolling too.

Stylus to write my signature in word/other digital format; and brought onenote up a handful of times to take notes.

You will probably get more use of a touchscreen/stylus if you are studying.

  • I have a lenovo 2 in 1 with a stylus and it was handy for signing stuff, some image editing tasks like the lasso tool, and if you use one note to annotate stuff.
Also the touchscreen can be handy for scrolling etc, especially when you have it layed out flat with a few looking at it at once, or folded over etc.
Personally, I wouldn't get a laptop now without a touchscreen.

  • Totally depends on your use. But in saying that if there isnt much difference between touch and non touch I recommend getting touch version.

    Daily uses can be:
    1. Editing pdfs, signatures and all.those stuffs.
    2. Scrolling and browsing is much more easier with touch.
    3. Note taking, sketching and print screen
    4. If you are designer or student or programmer or someone who just loves to write or edit, you will know the ease of use it has.

With the stylus I don't really use it unless I need to write or draw something.

At the end of the day, it all comes to what you are using it for.
    Goodluck.
