Wowser…if you wanted a basic machine, you could scrap it in for $300 and do it comfortably for $400!

Buying a laptop would make more sense. I bought a laptop with a top of the line i7 quad core, 4gig ram, nice graphics card, one year warranty all for 680. Cheaper if you went for the lower model which is 570 or so. I browsed around MSY and I don't think I can build something comparable cheaper. Definitely not with a legit version of windows.

    $1K? WOW

You can do what you want for about $200 from eBay. Plus a screen (Plenty on Ozbargain)

I suggest getting a dual-core, but really even an old Pentium 4 will do Internet, burning and WP (at a cost of about $100). You only need a more modern CPU if you want to game or do media encoding (in a serious manner)

i wouldn't go for P4 these days(even if it is cheap)

barely any great OS that can run with these computers

      @ OP

if you are looking into budget computers
Go for an AMD-based computer(as amd are usually cheaper[well better value] than intel)

  • cheers for the info! you've been awesome

    • anyone?? was more lookin at the 1st 1

The G620 one is better. Although, you take a look at this and see if it's to your liking

      $509
      http://www.itestate.com.au/pages/product/pdt_product_detail.…

      Includes:

      Core i3 2100
      2GB DDR3 RAM
      1 TB hard disk
      21.5 inch LED screen
      Keyboard, mouse and speakers.
      Assembly + 12 month wrty.

Still has 5 in stock. The CPU is better and you get a bigger screen, but only 12 months RTB warranty.
After the 12 month period, any broken parts you have to RMA directly to manufacturer.

      • Cheers Scrim!

Tell me RTB warranty, is it an arm and a leg to post back? :/
