Peeling Clear Coat, How to Fix?

Hi guys, I have a commuting car 08 lancer for country driving. It's been great for me, never had any mechanical issues before. However, the clear coating are peeling everywhere, and made the car looks absolutely horrible, on the roof and the rear bonnet mainly.

Just wondering how much does it cost to respray clear coat of the car or should I just repaint? Worth it? I sincerely have no plan to sell it, since it's cheap enough for me to run and no point buying new one since I will rake up high kms quickly. Or should I go for wrap? Any recommendations in Perth metro would be appreciated. Cheers!

  • Also interested, as my 2008 Mazda6 is doing the same. Maybe '08 was just a bad year for paint :D

      GFC paintjobs

      • Surely..

  • Hi, I also had a Mitsubishi Lancer VRX 2008 model. I had the same exact issue with clear coat peeling off. I also noticed many Lancers parked at Curtin University had the same problem. Black and Blue Lancers are the most common ones that I see everyday on the road.

I got a quote from Gosnells smash repairs and it was roughly $1200.

Ended up selling the car later on.

    • Dam, $1200 for paint job, co spidering the car only worth probably 3k now. Guess I better really DIY eh? Any recommendations on product to use?

I wouldn't expect a $1200 paint job to last more than 3 or 4 years, if that. A lot of work goes into good paint.

      • $1200 is unbelievably cheap. It would have horrible prep and finish and not last very long at all.

      • You can get clear coat spray cans from super cheap auto and go from there.

Alternatively you can wrap the car but my brother bought a wrapped car and it started breaking down and looked horrible.

You can't wrap over peeling paint, or rather you can but it'll quickly look like rubbish. Not to mention wrapping the whole car would cost about what the car is worth anyway.

How the crap did you find a smash repair that only charges $33/hour for labour?

      • To be honest I don't know. It's that I used to live there and went there once on my way home.

      • How did you work that out?

        • It is literally all over the quote that alreadytaken posted the link of.

      • They pay the workers $5 an hour and use Bunnings house paint.

  • rear bonnet

    Back bonut

    • Gunna need an ms paint diagram for that.

  • Just rub it back and rattle can it if you must do something.

Absolutely not worth it given the age and value of the car. You could sand and rattle can multiple coats of clear then lightly sand and polish and you'll get an OK result but IMO it's not even worth the time you'd spend. It's only a cosmetic issue so just drive it until it dies.

  • just scrape off the loose stuff, clean and dry the car and apply a small amount of auto transmission fluid to a cloth and wipe it over. it will lessen the peeling effect and seal the exposed paint.

  • Keep in mind that this is a manufacturer defects. Mitsubishi used cheap and nasty paint on these models.

    • While that may be true there's so many factors on how the paint has been treated for the past 11+ years that could easily lead to an early failure of the clear coat.

  • Hi, I have a new car, well 6 months old and noticed the clear coat on the bonnet is now cracked in about 2 inch square size, taken to dealership who advised bird poo and not covered under warranty. I've always cleaned car, spotless and never let any sort for more than a day. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    • Fix it asap. It spreads quite quickly.

    • Tell dealer to fix it?

    • +1

If you're 100% certain you've never left any bird or especially bat poo on it then ask a reputable panel beater to take a look and see what they think the cause is. You can always go direct to head office of the manufacturer. Just because a dealer says no doesn't actually mean anything.

What make and model of car?

Already heard from head office and they said it's bird poo, so won't fix it.

Shouldn't there be some rules that a car should be suitable for use, and suitable for climate? Or is it due to the fact clear coat is cheap on these cars? Any other suggestions? Panel beaters have said it is poo but clear coat is obviously cheap on these cars.
I've got a 2009 Kia and has sat in the elements for over 10 years and has better Paint then the new holden.
