NUC and NAS for Security Cameras

Could you please recommend a suitable NUC and NAS, the sole job is to record 24/7 camera footage from 12 POE security cameras.

Also how much storage I should include.

Looking for something fairly entry level as I don't need it for any other function than camera recording.

Many thanks in advance

Edit: looks like some NAS can act as NVR as well which means no need for NUC?

  • 12 POE security cameras ? Ouch, are you a dealer ;)

    Google it next time. https://www.seagate.com/au/en/video-storage-calculator/

    • Commercial office building? Thanks for the link

  • In my understanding, NVR can store, view and manage.
NAS just for a storage. NUC can add software which work as NVR.

You may need something like this, https://csd.com.au/products/HIK-7732NI-I4-16 or more choices https://www.securitywholesalers.com.au/product-category/hikv…

for setup like you, and you doing this for business not for dealing. Why not talk to a professional :)

    • I thought posting on ozb was talking to the professionals 😂

      • I'm a professional googler ;) , but if your POE security cameras are hikvision, I would go for NVR, maybe talk to the people in securitywholesalers.com.au and ask for recommendation.

  • +2

In the past I've used two IP cameras on my Synology NAS, and it worked well.
In terms of the sizing it really comes down to the CPU load and I/O rates for handling the footage from 12 cameras.
Synology have a calculator page where it will tell you what you need.

If not Synology, look at QNAP or other brands. Though maybe this is not professional enough for you.

It really depends on what signal your cameras are outputting - whether it is already digital H.264/H.265 or an analog stream that must be digitised. If they're already IP cameras, then just plug them into your PoE switch.

    • They're asking for advice on OzB, Synology is plenty professional enough.

      Probably too professional ;)

    • Thanks, yep IP cameras that will be plugged into a PoE switch. Thanks for the Synology link, that helps

  • On Windows platform Blue Iris is a popular choice for NVR software. Not the cheapest but highly recommended in terms of ease of use and stability.

Another point to consider is the network set up. From a security perspective it's worthwhile to isolate IP cameras on its own network (physical or VLAN). 12 cameras will generate a good amount of traffic - so having some isolation will minimise interference with other computers on the network. Many cameras also have 'cloud' features and are known to call home a lot, so it's a bit dangerous if exposed to the internet; it's especially dubious if buying cameras from non-official channels such as Aliexpress / eBay. To tightly prevent unauthorised access to the system requires configuring a router and managed switches properly. This can take considerable effort depending on your existing skill level.
