New year, new projector deal.

Another one of those cheap 720p LED projector deals via Amazon US, similar to the previous TaoTronics deal in price. The projector appears to be a rebadged version of the YG610. Usual price on Gearbest or Aliexpress seems to be around $200-$300.

The projector seems to be the same as (or an updated version of) the Vankyo Leisure 510 or the Elephas PRO610. Probably not the best projector, but shouldn't be too bad for the price. The product specs suggests that it is 480p, however, other pages point to a 720p projector for the YG610 model.

The OEM website also points to a 720p projector for the YG610 model.

    its 480
    and lol @ 7200 Lumens

    • seems 3600 Lumens mentioned in https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32934945924.html

      • +2

It won't be 3600 lumens either.

      • +1

Never believe the lumens rating on the specs for these projectors, they usually are referring to the LED bulb's lumen output at best. Consider that most LCDs would have a transmittance rate close to ~10% and lost from the optical system, the ANSI lumens would be closer to 5-8% of the quoted figure imho.

Regarding native resolution, the OEM website (AAO, which also OEM for Vankyo and Elephas) suggests that the YG610 is native 720p. Other resellers of the same model also suggest that the native resolution is 720p. I would expect the 480p is inaccurate in this case. Worst case scenario, if it turns out to be 720p, returning it to Amazon should be relatively straight forward anyways.

        • it says on the listing:
          Screen Resolution 800 x 480

          The native resolution is not 720p (1280 x 720)

"Built-in Dual Stereo Speakers (3W) with SRS Sound Which Will Bring You a Shock Experience While Watching"

    • +1

I think they mean that you will get a "shock" if you touch them by mistake

    • +2

3W? I'm not sure my walls can withstand that doof output

    • The shock is they actually mean 3 WillyWonkas. One WillyWonka is equivalent to 7 Oompa Loompa which is mighty loud!

  • OzB-ers, I'm a real projector rookie but wanting to get one to use in the bedroom for TV shows/movies etc. This looks in the price range of what I'm thinking! Don't need some crazy HD - just good enough to feel like we are not watching it on a potato.

Seems like I just plug my laptop/iPad straight into this - and where does the sound come from??? The projector box?

    Any help appreciated.

    • +6

buy a potato and pocket the profit

      • +2

Spend remainder on acid, and watch the potato. Guaranteed good time

    • The projector should have a pair of basic / crappy speakers built in, you can also connect the projector to an external sound bar if needed.

    • +1

      Buy a TV. $100 should buy you a 40-50" off FB/Gumtree

      • +1

Easier to project an image onto the ceiling than mount a TV ;)

        • Can't say I'd like to lay on my back and look upwards to watch TV :/ couldn't think of anything worse

          • +1

@spackbace: My son has been doing this almost every night since I got a Xiaomi youth projector. The other day I lay in his bed and tried to watch a Spongebob episode, by the time the theme song was finished, I had the worst vertigo of my life LOL

            • @GregFiona: Yep, no rolling over to get a different position etc, you're just stuck looking up

    • i bought this last time on promo less than $100

      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07FY6FZ9V

      search ozbargain for taotronics projector

downside : fan is a bit noisy when there is nothing playing on the screen, once it played, the voice overweight the fan noise. altough slightly small fan noise still can be heard

but overall, i am happy to what i pay for… just need to switch off the light to watch, like a mini gold class in my living room now, project straight to the plain white wall

      • Is it bright?
        Is the resolution sharp?

        • if he says he has to switch off the light to watch, I’m sure he means it’s not that bright :)

    • +1

this would really only be for the novelty… expect a potato…and you shouldn't be tooooo disappointed… not something you'd use for regular viewing.

    • Honestly if you're in the market for a projector you're going to need to budget a bit more than $100.

    • I'd suggest paying $40 for some cheap Logitech speakers, a projector like this with 3w sound is really ineffective, especially if the fan kicks in.

  • Where is the ULTIMATE guide to the cheapest ass projectors ?

Everytime they seem to end up being crap. There has to be one (and only one) that is King of cheapy projectors.

Honestly look on Facebook market place, get a second hand office projector for $150 it would be leagues better I'd think.

I have a GP100 projector from Vivibright, which seems comparable. Get a cheap $30 screen and you can have your own outside cinema. Works great for me.

    • 'Outside cinema' is exactly what I want.

      Currently $215 from Banggood.

      • +1

This or this are 1080p, and seem to be well reviewed on BG

        Bit cheaper on AE

        • +1

Yeah, I got my GP100 a couple of years ago and only paid about $180AUD. That M18 looks good, though I wouldn't pay that much more to get an outdated version of Android in it; just plug in an Android tv box or Chromecast.
I bought a fabric screen online on the cheap, though a white wall would be better.

What do you guys think about this one please?

    • Native Resolution 720p

  • Did anyone figure out of the deal projector is actually 720p?
