Smart Downlights vs Smart Switch

Yet another question about downlights, but this time in relation to smart switches. Hopefully I'll soon have all the info to make a decision and leave you all alone :)

Anyone care to explain pros and cons? Basically I see it as a question of economy of scale, as detailed below.

Smart downlights:
Pro - ability to control each light individually
Pro - cheaper than installing a switch for a small amount of lights
Con - more expensive if you don't need individual control over many lights (one switch to rule them all!)

Smart switch:
Pro - much cheaper if you don't need individual control over many lights (one switch to rule them all!)
Pro - cheaper to replace downlights (generic 'dumb' lights appear to be at least around 1/3 of the cost of smart lights)
Pro - less impact on router if it can't handle more WIFI devices)
Con - no individual control over lights
Con - requires electrician to install (if your circuitry can handle it)

Have I misunderstood the concept or missed any pros/cons?

  • I hear some of the smart switches has:
    A ringing like background noise
    As well as
A loud click when you turn it on

May depend on the brand you buy though

  • Smart downlights cons:
    - Need to keep wall switch on at all times. May draw some electricity.
    - Need app to control? other people in the house without the app cannot control the lights.

  • The optimal solution is to get the downlights wired without a switch so they are permanently powered than install a smart switch which controls lights via internet so they are still active.

  • A big con is that you still need to take out your phone when walking into a room without a smart switch. You can just press the switch and turn on the lights. I don't want to have to take out my phone to control the lights when I am walking into a room. A would say a smart switch makes more sense because you get to use the phone when needed and also able to physically switch the lights on and off at the switch as a force of habit.
