I Want to Quit Drinking but How Do I Get Rid of My Alcohol Bottles?

For whatever reason, I have decided to stop drinking.

However from past deals on ozbargain, I have stocked up quite a bit of alcohol: beer, wine, spirits, etc.

Unfortunately, unlike other unwanted junks, I can't just sell this anywhere (Gumtree, ebay, ozbargain, Facebook). Any suggestions how I can get rid of them without complete loss?

I am an introvert and therefore going door to door or sitting at a pub offering this to stranger is out of the question.

Thank you.

  • Try The Sinclair Method (TSM), and drink your way to sobriety.

  • Hi, I don't drink, but realised how annoying this is. Some big sites allow selling BUT you need a liquor license - I'm sure this will cost way too much to get, if possible.

I've been looking at whiskey.auction UK auctioner, a fair bit of info all in £'s with VAT.

Your best option (commission too high though they sell beer too) is:-

    https://www.mybottleshop.com.au/sell-my-bottles

    FEES :-

We charge 27.5% commission (that includes GST of 2.5%) on the sale of your bottle. You deliver the bottles to our warehouse, we photograph the bottles if required and then list the bottles for sale. When they sell we pay you the retail amount less our commission and less GST. Remember that 10% of our sale price is remitted to the Australian government as Goods and Sservice Tax. You may decide the retail price or you can leave to us to decide the maximum amount may retail for.

    AND ALSO :-

Please note there is a $45 per bottle holding fee if your bottle/s don't sell

    • Far out!! That's crazy! That holding fee rules out almost my entire collection!

    • What the whiskey auctions include the whole VAT. Postage from the UK must be a bit steep!

What if you sold it all to someone ahead of Australia Day, for their party. Or throw a party and tell everyone to drink as much as they want.

    • That's what I want to do. The problem is I can't advertise it anywhere.

I admire your resolution mate, keep it up

  • Are you by any chance in Melbourne? And what exactly is on offer lol.

    Have a party coming up.

  • Interesting that Ozbargain is responsible for your over-purchasing of alcohol. Social media has overtaken traditional media in many realms of influence.

Imagine how many guns some OzBargainers have accumulated by now.

    • Mate, I complained to the admin how I cant block out alcohol deals. Anyway I managed to hold myself off eventually.

In the past when I see deals that get up voted in hundreds, it's just so damn hard not to.

Presents sorted for the next 5 years.

Cheaper ones = birthday / xmas presents
More expensive ones = wedding / anniversary / special occasion presents

You won't be getting cash back, but plenty of savings from not having to buy presents.

  • Same situation for me as well…

  • Why the rush to get rid of it?

Take the nice wines to dinner parties, give the spirits away as birthday or Christmas presents etc, keep a few beers in the fridge for mates that pop over etc

Although if you're an alcoholic just get rid of it asap - your brain is trying to find a way to get you to keep it.

      They keep singing to me…

Why don't you pour them down the drain? The expensive 'waste' of doing this will reinforce the concept that you truly have, and don't support you ever drinking alcohol again. Say its $1,000 worth of alcohol you just poured down the sink. Next time your out and about, and you feel like drinking. That pot of beer isn't gonna cost you $4.45c. Its gonna cost you $1,004.45c.

Good luck on your sobriety. Ps. your not Quitting drinking, your embracing sobriety. Quitting is for losers and is a negative mindset. Be positive. Be sobre.

  • Depending on size of your collection, you can consider getting a liquor license.
Fees does not look too high.

  • Vic has a temporary limited liquor license, might be worth seeing if NSW has something similar. I used one to sell a couple of bottles on eBay some years ago.

You may find an Independent retailer will buy them off you as others have mentioned but I doubt most would.

I've also seen on many occasions people doing the dodge on eBay with either a fake liquor license or selling 'empty bottles'

  • Maybe try giving them as a gifts to your good friends or family members? Also, I think your friends would be more than happy to sell them on ebay or smth. Especially if you have bottles on the more expensive side.

"For whatever reason, I have decided to stop drinking." - "They keep singing to me…"

Deal with the loss of any perceived value (you've not really said you have 10 bottles or 100 bottles as to value lost, is it $100 or $1000) and tip em out if you can't manage it, I expect it could cost you more if you don't.

  • Dig a hole, bury it. If the apocalypse happens you have a nice source of trade goods.
