Network attached Scanner/Printer

Have decided to go all electronic with storing all my receipts (onto my HP Mini Server no less) so tax etc is easier. Anyone got any recommendations? There's heaps of cheap multi-functions available at HN, OW, HT but I'm not sure how good any of them are. Preferably, would like to get one that's network attached to upload straight to the NAS.

  • There are a couple of threads on whirlpool about this, regrding consumer printers there are very few that do true network scanning. They require a PC to be turned on and cant do genuine scan-to-email.

I can recommend the approach that I use which Is an iPhone app called jotnot. You take a photo of the document which it converts to high contrast black and white and also handles the pincussion for you so that even I you take a photo from an angle the end result is square. It supports direct upload to google docs which is gonna be better than putting them on your NAS.

If you don't have an iPhone I'm sure there are android apps that do something similar.

    • Thanks.

I've got an iPhone but am unsure about the quality an app can provide…

      • Give it a go.. there is a free version avaialble to try.

I use it on a 3GS so if you have an iphone4 you can expect better quality from the camera. The 3GS camera does the job adequately.

  • Canon's mx870 is a budget choice. ~$200. Network scanning requires a computer though.

Otherwise for laser I purchased an older Brother 8880DN for my sister 2 years back. Cost around $750 then.

Fuji Xerox's MFCs are also a great choice. These can generally scan to e-mail directly without a computer — i.e. it has a SMTP server built into the MFC :) www.fxprinters.com.au

  • Found the HP 8500A, cheapest I've found is $275 and it's still an inkjet.

Wonder if it's possible to firmware upgrade a cheaper unit to have this functionality?

  • Just get a print server, if you select carefully you can connect a MFC (and scan) to a network very easily.

For example this little D-link unit http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=776

Not a recommendation - just an example.

Make sure the device is "seamless" and doesn't require special printer drivers to be loaded (like some Belkins).

    • Do you have one of these? How do they work? Do you configure a scan folder in the WebUI?

  • My Samsung clp 300N works networked quite well (issue with printer appearing 'offline' fixed) =) It is just plugged directly into my modem/router via an Ethernet cable, and that's it. It's toners are of good yield and price too. Although the model is discontinued, there are the newer Samsung color laser models with scanner/copier functions available for about 400. • Can you scan to a network drive or email without a computer?
