Car Battery Prices: Who do you recommend?

I have to replace my Hyundai i40 battery and are overwhelmed by the number of options and wide difference in prices.

Who do you recommend offers value and who should I avoid using? RACV seem to be a complete rip-off for their batteries.

Ring up a proper battery place in an industrial estate. Not main street retail and not RACV. Look for one with a decent warranty (more than 12 months) as at least the manufacturer has confidence in their product. Car batteries should last 5 - 6 years depending on how you drive.

If you are a Costco member they do batteries, and tires. Might be worth looking at for comparison.

    Just walk into a Repco/Supercheap/Autobarn

Tell them you have a dodgy i40 battery. Better still, bring the battery in as sometimes within the same model year, they may decide to have positive and negative on the other ends just to mess with us a little.

    Connect new battery.

I would just go to Battery World or Every Battery. They will sell you a battery and fit it for you. Their batteries are fresh as they turn over stock constantly and they likely have fit batterys to every car model that is on the road. They will look up your car and may have 2-3 different price tiers to choose from. Go for the regular Century or Yuasa battery, should be around $180-$230.

Century ain't what it used to be. Had a few batteries fail between marine deep cycle and car batteries.

Yuasa has been consistently decent but significantly more expensive.

Got it delivered and installed for later this evening for around $250. Would love to price compare in shop but a little hard when I can't drive the car to get there. Thanks all.

Is it stuffed, or just flat?

    • +1

It is more convenient just getting it done that way.

But depending on the price and particular battery you can get the neighbour (or as a yummy mummy I find it's always easier to play damsel in distress) to jumpstart and hop to your nearest supercheap. The hubby bans me from getting mobile mechanics as he's certain I pay a premium for that service and there are lots of auto shops within 5 minutes of us. What he doesn't realise is I am the one that has to put up with the kids at a auto store for 30 minutes!

I think they install for about $15 so if you really want to count your pennies it may work out just FYI for other bargainers…

  • Completely stuffed. Has gone flat three times in the last two weeks. Only storing around 5% charge.

That's flat*. It is likely to have a few too many dead cells hence undervolted.

If it is stuffed*, it will have 0 discharge.

Your car needs a certain voltage for it to start. It doesn't matter how many times your batteries can crank 99% of the required voltage.

*Based on the popular usage of the non-technical words of flat and stuffed.

I replaced my battery last week. Could have stuffed around chasing the lowest prices and fitting then dealing with the old one but went straight to the local battery shop and had one fitted in a few minutes.

ive always used supercharge batteries which come with a 3 year warranty. always had a life of >5 years. One lasted nearly 10 years.

      My mechanic recommends Supercharge batteries.

+1 Supercharge batteries are the bee's knees.

  • Thanks everyone. Give each other a + vote!

  • If you want to take my advice then get any brand as long as the battery is 100% new made. Not made from old battery. At the moment best one will be Bosch. It will last for a good 10years.
