Refund a Flight to a Cancelled Debit Card

Hi there,

I am in an interesting situation right now and would like some help with it.

I've recently purchased a return flight with JAL using a Westpac Debit card, but unfortunately several weeks later I've lost my Debit card and had to get a new one issued.

The tricky situation is that due to personal reasons, I need to will need to cancel my flight but I'm not sure whether I will be issued the refund since my Debit Cards number has changed.

I've called up both the bank and the airline numerous times and I'm still getting mixed answers as:

  1. The airline can only issue a refund on the original debit card.
  2. I've had mixed answers from different people in bank. One said that it should be refunded without an issue since its linked to my account. Another advised that I get the Airline to issue a refund using my NEW debit card number or via my BSB and ACC num.

I would appreciate if someone give their own word on this.

Cheers

This is correct. Won't be a problem, had it done before.

    • Hi can there,

Can I clarify that this was specifically a debit card refund, and it was for a flight?

I've only ever had debit cards and never used a credit card. The cards are linked to your account and bank will be able to map the payment to your account perfectly fine.

I can also confirm this. I used to manage ticketing/customer service departments for an airline until recently.

@donga100: I can also also confirm this, I used to work in a Credit Union and even refunds to an entire account that was closed came through.

          Curious as to why?

@ihbh: I never had a credit card ever.

For me. Never needed a credit card. If I need something I save up for it.

@xoom: Most ozbargainers use credit cards for the bonus points and Cashback benefits. I have been on countless holidays, hotels, activities because of it. Even purchased a few items from the store.

Spend $3,000 and receive an X amount of points. You don't go out of your way to spend it, you just pay your bills, etc cand it's done.

@ihbh: Never needed a credit card and always lived within my means on debit. The whole points collecting stuff is too much hassle and not worthwhile for me.

Each card number is unique, your old one is still linked to your actual account so it will work just fine.

  • Ive had this a few times. Twice it went eventually to my new card. For an old Amex they sent me a cheque.
