Recommend a Cheap 1TB SSD for PS3

obv read/write speed doesn't matter as it will be faster than a disk drive.

I don't think there's any point in using an SSD with a PS3. Performance increase will be marginal

    • well that might be true if i was getting an evo pro but i mean price/benefit of a cheap ssd. maybe they're not there there yet in price though which is fair

The PS3 internal drive uses the old SATA II interface. This means that the any SSD will be bottle necked here. The PS4 original and PS4 Slim also use this interface and many people say you don’t get much improvement. Only the PS4 Pro is able to make good use of an SSD since it has SATA III

    • Not true, it's highly dependent on the game.

Overall worth it considering the price these days.

      • Perhaps but still not worth it considering 1TB SSD still costs more than a used PS3

        • you have to compare it with a 7200 rpm drive not a used ps3

  • Aliexpress has a lot of chinese brands with a price tag you are looking for. Read their reviews, or sort by orders to see which are getting the best feedback.

    • hey i was looking last night and they actually seem expensive. can you link one please?

  • Goldenfir. I do not own these, as above, based on the number of orders, the will suit what you want it for. It may last longer than your ps3.

    • $120 shipped.. i'm pretty sure i can get a local ssd for not much more than that?

      • Thats up to you to decide. I'm sure this will be a great mod. If cost is your worry, settle for 500gig or 720gig. A game is max 30gig right?

        • true, im still trying to determine the ideal disk size, 1tb is more than enough though. atm i've got 9 games loaded on a 120gb ssd i had lying around. i think the best 20-30 games released on PS3 should fit on a 500gb disk? 250gb? not sure.

  • Western Digital Black 1tb WD10JPLX Hard Drive 2.5” should be good

  • Short answer - don't bother with such investment for ps3. A simple spinning drive would do.

Long answer - If you really want to spend that money, I'd recon first find out the hardware limitations (i.e. sata generation, and speed). Off the top of my head, ps3 should be sata ii at most. Perhaps a WD green/ blue drive?

  • Did you end up putting a SSD in your PS3?

    • yes, i'd recommend it if you upgrade one of your ssds on your machine to swap it into the ps3.

      • Is there a special type of ssd that the ps3 prefers?

        • the only thing i'd watch out for is if it's too big. but anything under 1tb should be ok. i wouldn't get anything fancy (nvme, m2, etc), just a standard sata one.

          • @magnitude: Was gonna get a 500gb one but I was reading something that the ps3 doesn’t like about the newer sdd’s but now I can’t remember what it was

  • I remember getting a SSHD for my PS3. That was baller.
