Can Someone Explain How Boost Found out My Hidden E-Mail Account?

I have two e-mail accounts:
(A) - used for general purpose
(B) - used for more private matters, including financials e.g. banking

I ported from Amaysim to Boost yesterday.
Both Amaysim and Boost accounts were created using e-mail account A.
However this morning I received an e-mail from Boost to e-mail account B saying porting has been complete.
Their e-mail address checks correctly, and number was ported over successfully within reasonable time-frame of e-mail being received.

How did they know my other e-mail account and send an e-mail to which I've never given information/consent to?

Edit:
I've discussed this with Boost rep online and this is our conclusion:

"during a port in, we never asked for an email address. We only obtain the basics which are
name, date of birth and home address, unless you have/ or had a Telstra account, Boost and Telstra uses the
same system so once we entered your name and date of birth on the system and this matched an old account -
it will automatically be linked on that account including the attached email into it."

Thanks all.

    They’re clearly spying on you..

you supplied to to either amaysim or boost

    • I wouldn't bother making a post if this is the case.
The actual log-in account for Amaysim is e-mail account A.
First e-mail received from Boost saying "we are processing your port" was received on account A.
Completion of porting e-mail was received on account B.

well they don't send messages to random email addresses …

Your username suggests you look after old retired Russian spies as a side gig. Ask one of them.

  • Are you a previous boost customer?

    • No but 5 years ago I was a Telstra broadband customer (and using e-mail account B) if this has anything to do with it (afaik Boost and Telstra are related?) Never had a Telstra mobile service.

This is probably it. Telstra and Boost both use the same backend system. More than likely when your Boost account was activated it would have found the old Telstra broadband customer account (driver licence, DOB) etc.

Plausable, but doesnt make total sense, people close down email addresses for spam etc, so why would you change the email address to an old one?

Just as an additional comment, I have a Boost and a Telstra account, and both send me emails via different email addresses.

      • This should be the reason I suppose, even for porting I got sms from Telstra as I remember

I have a number of email accounts for the same reason as you. I used the same mail program and one time I replied to an email from friends and it defaulted to the business address. They replied back and questioned if I had sent the email (expecting it from my personal address) then I realised the error.

It maybe sometime in the past you did the same by mistake. Could have even been when online chatting or some other communication situation. I doubt if Boost could be bothered to do an internet search via Spy agencies etc to search you out for multiple email addresses.

They can't even be bothered with some customers Telco concerns 😀

That said I understand your curiosity

  • How did they know my other e-mail account and send an e-mail to which I've never given information/consent to?

You have clearly given Telstra aka Boost your B email at some point. Boost is ran on the Telstra system, so they have just activated your old account when you went back to Boost.

  • Also try logging into your boost account using both email addresses (would be same password) do they both connect? If not which one?

    • They don't have this option believe it or not! They only allow you to "log-in" to your account using their Android/iOS app, using your phone number.

      • Ok, shows how much I have needed to look at my own account .

  • cut back on the meth / get carbon monoxide alarms installed in the house.

I dont think boost would want to send activation confirmations to other emails

  • You are the KGB. Should know the answer. Period.

  • Maybe somehow linked Facebook (b) to A. But probably the Telstra thing above

Or mail being forwarded by a rule but I think you checked that

  • Same thing happened to me when I ported over to them, I started getting emails to an email account I never provided to them. It was because they are part of Telstra and your hidden email account must be linked to a Telstra account with your mobile number.

  • This is a crazy idea, but have you tried asking Boost?

  • So this is just a guess; but telstra and boost likely use the same (ancient?) number provisioning system (which is a different system from their respective backends which deal with transactional emails/marketing).

If what you say is true, you probably have an account in there somewhere where they keep track of you using a combination of your ID details when you initially created an account, and email B is tied to that.

The port success email is likely coming from the provisioning system, which exists as a separate service that both companies interact with.

  • Looks like OP found their answer. Thread closed.
