Laptop Suggestion for Part time Uni.

Hey!

I’ve been out of the computer scene for a while now and want suggestions for a laptop I’ll need for online study for Uni, part time.

Ideally it’ll need the below;

  • 15inch screen (not a fan of smaller screens)
  • SSD hard drive
  • 8gb Ram
  • good processor ( unfamiliar with this and what’s good these days but need something quick and can handle multiple screens/applications open )
  • reliable brand / warranty
  • windows
  • price range $500-800

I had a look around prior and I guess something like this would suit but just wanna check if I’m missing something or for a little bit extra I could get something better? = https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/dell-inspiron-15-3000-156-inc…

  • Go into any store and see what you feel comfortable using. No point buying a laptop with the best specs, but just doesn't feel right for you. As for me, nothing feels better than by MacBook.

  • Hi mate, if you can, try to get a laptop with 1920 x 1080 resolution, the one that you mentioned sold by the goodguys has 1366 x 768 resolution and it'll look blurry as hell, trust me on this.

Also, try to browse second hand laptops on eBay gumtree that matches your $500 - $800 budget, you will get a better specced laptop for the price range that way.

What else….., oh weight. IF you can, find a laptop that's less than 1.9Kg in weight if you don't want to break your back.

    As for specs:
    - 8GB of RAM is fine unless you're the type of person who opens up tons of applications at the same time
    - Try to get 8th Gen./9th Gen CPU if you can but I really doubt you can get those with $500 - $800 budget, even if you buy a second hand laptop
    - Try to get 256GB storage as bare minimum because anything with 128GB storage will only leave you around 100GB or less storage after Windows OS installation (please correct me if I'm wrong)

That's all from me though but I'm not exactly tech savvy so yeah haha

    Regards

    • Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!

Didn’t think of resolution! Thanks for the and I’ll also keep the cpu in mind as well.

Storage I was on the fence about and thought worst case have an external HD but I feel your right, for the little extra 256GB should cover it better

  • Even though it is a 14", the Lenovo deals seem to be quite popular: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514623

Not too heavy at around 1.75kg as well.

  • good processor ( unfamiliar with this and what’s good these days but need something quick and can handle multiple screens/applications open )

Unless you're doing FEA simulations, 3D graphics, video encoding, bitcoin, AI, or some similar cutting-edge tech thing, you'll be fine on any reasonably modern CPU.

The SSD is a much more important thing for overall responsiveness.
