Is it legal to charge for "no fault found"?

I have a Sony TV that keeps having an issue where it won't power on until i do a hard reset consisting of unplugging the TV, waiting and then plugging it back in.

It is out of warranty (2 years, 2 months old) but i believe that consumer law will cover me.

The Sony rep said they can send someone to have a look but will charge if they do not find a fault.

My issue is that it is an intermitent problem, so if it does not happen when they come to see the TV, i may be charged. Is this fair? How would i go about sorting out this issue and proving the fault?

    Welcome to Ozbargain.

Yes its fair. They have spent the time to come and diagnose.

    Android TV model?

Have you performed a Forced Factory Reset?

I don't think he has performed Google.

Flip side … you would have a cohort of people out there who would have Sony (or whoever) coming out constantly just to waste their time if there wasn't a disincentive for doing so.

That's the thing about making something "free". Firstly, there is no demand regulator in place to sort those who truly need it, from those who'll just take it because its free. Secondly, there are those who will actively and deliberately abuse the situation just because they can.

  • I can't help but I have the same problem (Sony A8F). It used to be every day, but I did I factory settings reset it's a lot less, but still happens.

  • My X90F does the same thing, I've done the resets but it still happens. It's quite annoying for an (at the time) $4k TV.

Known issue. I found that a factory reset of the TV solved it for me.

Yeah pretty sure this is how I solved it for my in-laws Sony android TV.

  • I had a Samsung plasma that did the same thing.. It was 3 years old, they sent out the local repairer and they collected it as it was 65 inch
They advised Samsung it needed a Power supply but it was a part of the PANEL as well and Samsung no longer stocked the part, so they offered a refund or a new one,
I had them supply a new one..
I wouldn't buy extended warranty as the law is clear, must last a reasonable amount of time , 2 years 2 months is not.

Id start with SONY, if its only 2 years and 2 months old, check out the Acc website, its best to get something in writing as if they dont play ball you can show the Acc and help sort it. They should organize a tech for you in my opinion.
It possible a power supply issue , so Id be Googling the model and symptoms to see any quick fixes as well as the suggested ones or KNOWN issues..

Film it with your phone is a good idea aswell.

Most power supply issues are common , so if the tech knows what they are doing they wont go, OH i didn't see a problem , they should say, its most likely THIS and here what we can do.

  • Did the technician look at it. Did they attempt to replicate the fault. Did they do some testing on it? If yes to any of these, pay the man.

You wouldn't work for free, why should anyone else?

  • Yeah, you pay for the information.

Before you didn't know what was wrong and then you learnt there was no fault. This is a service somebody spent time on and should be compensated.
