Tourist Ban - When Will We See Discounted Hotel Prices for Sydney?

Looking to book a hotel in Sydney for early March, but I'm guessing that rates will fall in the next few weeks because of the tourist ban .

So I was wondering if anyone have any observations or comments on expected price falls? A review of online search engines indicates normal pricing at this stage.

What tourist ban? I'm sure the tourists from Australia, NZ, America, Europe, south and southeastern Asia, etc will still keep Sydney hoteliers busy.

  • The tourist industry is bracing for a million dollar hit? Or is this hyperbole?

Sydney isnt a go to place for tourists of other countries after the bushfires. So I dont follow your logic that hoteliers will be kept busy.

We will get a better idea over the few weeks or so. If this really blows up then people will be reluctant to travel at all. In any case, China represents over 15% of the total tourism market. You missed a few zeros by the way.

      • Just looking at some data from SARS. No local data but some Singapore based metrics.Looks like occupancy rates dropped to 20%-30% from the annual average of 74%.

I think I will wait a couple of weeks as I cannot see any pressures pushing prices up.

        • No SARS cases in Australia, so probably had minimal impact

Our hotels have always been overpriced and out of touch with market rates - what makes you think they’ll pay attention now and be responsive to local market forces?

You mean you don't want to pay 1/4 of a weeks wage for 1 night in a hotel room?

      What are market rates?

I would have thought market rates were the rates that gave the most profit for the business?

      • Market rates are what people will pay. If the rooms are not filling up they will need to drop prices.

        • Thats not true.

A business does not need to be full to get the best prices.

Just because there is a lack of demand at a specific time, it doesn't mean that the prices have to plummet.

  • What is this tourist ban you speak of? Are all tourists being banned?

    • Reference was to those foreign nationals who present risk and listed by our government.
      Your thoughts on discounted hotels?

  • I was thinking the same thing this morning.
Hotel already booked. Now wondering if they agree to at least upgrade the room if prices drop…

If you monitor hotels that target chinese tour groups you may see some reductions when occupancy rates drop. You are more likely to see hotel managers in the media demanding government bailouts though.

    • Already happening with the fishing industry, must be all those unsold lobsters

      • Lobster sandwiches for lunch, beats the Vegemite!

  • You could book a room now at a flexible rate, and if prices fall then re-book. This protects you from possible steep increases closer to the date but still allows you to benefit if prices fall.

  • Just booked

    $134.00 after cash back. Wow

Saving of around $70-80 dollars from last time I booked.
