Colgate Optic White range - similar case to Nurofen?

I recall Nurofen being fined by ACCC for making misleading claims on their product range. The fine was increased to $6M after an appeal was upheld.

As part of Colgate's Optic White range, there are three products that seem to have the exact same ingredients:

Optic White Stain-Less White
Optic White Express White
Optic White High Impact White

With regards to the Nurofen case, do you think there is a similar situation here with Colgate?

  • Similar? Maybe. But misrep cases are notoriously fact specific. In this case for example, I don't see Colgate as making specific claims about each product being better than the others in any specific role, unlike in the Nurofen case.

panadol is doing the same thing. Although maybe they avoid charges because of the reason you stated.

It's annoying as my in-law stresses that the back-pain panadol really works and refuse to buy/take the normal panadol even though I've pointed out that it has the same active ingredient.

      • Might have different other ingredients for uptake and or dosages? Or just marketing.

the active ingredient is exactly the same, 500mg paracetamol.

panadol claim that the back pain one is absorbed faster.
maybe it is, maybe it is the same.
at the end of the day, it treats the pain on your back the same way.

          • @Bargain80: Yeah. Well most pain is the same no matter where it is, so stands to reason painkillers will also be the same.

@HighAndDry: i know with Panadol the different varieties they have work differently due to having extra added ingredients, for example the tough pain relief contains caffeine as well. your guess is as good as mine if it works better.

but the other factor for Panadol is that the different varieties are a different type of tablet, for instance capsules/caplets and tablets which are designed to be broken down quicker/slower to accommodate different needs. Nurofen offered all their different varieties in the same options.

In taking this enforcement action, the ACCC was particularly concerned that consumers had been misled into purchasing Nurofen Specific Pain Products, and paying more for those products

Do these toothpastes all cost the same?

    • Good point

    • Hmm, thanks - looks like they all have a retail price of $9.99.

      • But do they have a generic whitening that is the same formula but cheaper? That was the case with Nurofen where IIRC there was a cheaper Ibuprofen Lysine generic fast absorption variety too.

Ironically, you might still end up paying more regardless.

"Hmmm, now Express sounds pretty darn fast. But high impact sounds like it has a…high impact. Saying that, I do have a problem with them stains…I'll just get all three."

  • Are some of them targeted at a particular gender?

    How about adding a poll?

  • Maybe the tooth paste is the same but they just advertise each with 1 of the 3 qualities. You know people don't have such long attention spans now.

  • I also thought from the heading that Colgate started making pain relief medicine. Lucky I didn't start eating my tooth paste.

    • it does

  • Toss the crap in the bin… move over to Oral - B, and see results within 2/3 days.

  • Nobody does the placebo effect, do why can't manufacturers use it to benefit us?? I could never understand why Nurofen got into trouble!!! People swore by the specifically named nurafen! Grandmother used to tell me her magic medicine was specifically for my headache and it would go away after I swallowed a spoonful of lemon and sugar…
