Best value Comprehensive insurance with learner driver added

Hi all fellow bargain hunters,

I have just moved from Queensland to Victoria and have to change my car insurance as NRMA don't cover Victoria. The problem I now face is that NRMA did charge any extra for learner drivers for the policy they just charged an additional excess. Im trying to find another company that offers a good rate as all the insurance companies here want to charge me an extra $1000 just for adding my 16 yo son to the policy.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • I think RACV doesn't charge extra for L's, however age access may apply at the time of claiming.

    Bingle

    • Unfortunately Bingle was the same as all the others $1550 if my son is on the policy or go with him not on the policy $670 the excess below which is a crazy amount!

      Excess of $795
Age excess, for drivers under 25 years: $600
Unlisted household member or unlisted regular driver excess: $1,950

      Total of $3345!

  • We ended up going with YOUI, can't remember the exact details now but they seemed to have the best deal when junior was learning.

  • AAMI automatically cover learners when being supervised by an insured driver. From their FAQ:

They’re automatically covered under your insurance policy, as long as there’s an insured, licensed driver in the front passenger seat with them when they’re driving.

If a learner is driving at the time of an incident, an inexperienced driver or age excess of $400 will apply.

    • Edit: I didn't read the other additional PDS. Learners don't need to go on the policy!

Most companies don’t charge for learner drivers, it’s the excess that changes. You will have your normal excess plus an “inexperienced driver excess” on top of that.

  • Hi guys, I had changed my insurance from Woolies to Coles. Anyway when i called them tonight they said I would need to add my 17 years old and the insurance premium doubled!
I might go with aami at this stage as they are certainly covering (albeit there is excess for younger drivers)
