Looking for laptop ~$600 range

Hello

I am helping a friend buy a laptop for Uni and am after some suggestions from the community.

His criteria are as follows:

  • ~$500-$600 mark
  • Won't be used for gaming
  • Would prefer i5/i7 chip if possible
  • 14" or 15" form factor for portability

I think that is about it. Not overly concerned if RAM is low or if it has a HDD as those can be upgraded quite easily.

    Are you ok with used?

    I would recommend A Thinkpad T460 / T460s / X1 Carbon Gen 3.

    Well built, easy to upgrade and service.

      Thanks. I was having a look through Scumtree today at secondhand one - will discuss with my friend tonight whether he will accept used.

        Don't do that. Go on ebay and put your criteria in and search for a "manufacturer refurbished" laptop. Safest used purchase.

      Definitely check if drive and memory can be upgraded. You might be surprised at what is not upgradeable. For example the new Alienware m15 has soldered RAM!
