ANZ credit card travel insurance - book refundable qantas flight to activate the insurance and then cancel it later?

Hi all,

I am looking at getting an ANZ Platinum credit card for the travel insurance (6 months, $250 must be spent on flights/hotels etc. to activate it)

I am going travelling overseas for around 6 months, starting in Bali but don't know yet where I will be returning from.

It is possible to book a refundable (flex) Qantas flight to return in around 7 months time from Auckland - Melbourne for around $600 (which would activate the insurance) then when I'm more certain, book my actual return flight and cancel the Qantas one?

Cheers

Check your PDS if you want reliable answers.

From memory, I don't think it covers 6 months.

    • I have checked it and it says the cover ends if the return leg is cancelled. I was more just wondering if anyone has done this before.

      • You didn't check, otherwise you would see

If you have met all the criteria listed under Part A - Eligibility &
Activation of Cover before leaving Australia, cover is available
under International Travel Insurance for your journey for a
period of up to six (6) consecutive months for cardholders,
        their spouses and/or dependants.

        • Thanks but I know it covers 6 months, that’s not my question

What is the cost of travel insurance if you paid for it separately? Might it be better value if the cost is less of the credit card's annual fee.

    • Thanks - that’s a good point. I haven’t looked as in the first year the fee is $0! Then $87

If you get a refund on the "refundable (flex) Qantas flight to return in around 7 months time from Auckland - Melbourne" you will deactivate the insurance as you didn't make the purchase. Honestly, you would be better just buying travel insurance and then you will know you are covered.

    • Thanks for the reply. I’m thinking of keeping the flight until I’m back in Australia and then cancelling it (so could book a return flight 10 months away).

You don’t need to spend $250 on flights to activate just on travel expenses…

Why would you need travel insurance when you haven’t yet spent $250? And why would you not just spend the first $250 on the ANZ card to activate it?

I doubt you will get out of the country without spending at least $250 in advance so as long it’s spent on the ANZ card you’re covered…

Also note that the “activation” on their website simply provides a written note based on the answers you give, it doesn’t actually activate the policy, to activate the policy you simply need to spend the $250.

  • Oh god yeah. Keep doing stuff like that to ruin it for everyone
