Looking for a Recommendation for a Workout App

Hi OzBargainers,

Recently joined a gym to look after my health. I have never been to a gym previously so have never got a PT or anything similar. Currently, I am only using cardio machines to run, bike, row and elliptical and I would like to try using weight machine.

I was wondering if you know of good apps that can teach me a routine of exercise or how to use weight machines. Tried couple of apps but they seem to be really expensive ($20/month or so with 12 months minimum?). Free would be preferable but if paying money is worth it, I wouldn’t mind trying it.

Thank you!

YouTube has all the good stuff and it's free.

Search stuff like full body work out or something and you're set

      This.

Also, OP did not mention their goal. Is it weight loss, strength or general fitness? Everyone has a different goal so you should be choosing a workout that helps you achieve your goals.

JEFIT was one I was using

    • Jefit was the first one I started using and I am still using it 3 years later. It is perfectly sufficient haha.

Congrats OP on taking the plunge!

Check out these 3 channels mate. They have everything from Beginners to Advanced. Some of the best advice you would come across when it comes to fitness, whatever your goals maybe.

I would recommend an app like Fitnotes to track your progress. I simply love this app to track my workouts and compare to see how far I have come.

Also check out Bodybuilding.com if you need any more advice.

My 2 cents: Don't try to lift heavy :) Get your form right and everything will follow, whether you are wanting to get strong, get lean or get big. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I just subscribed :)

  • Thank you everyone! :)

  • This really depends on your goal and what you are looking to achieve. Channels like Athlean X are great, however for the inexperienced you may leave feeling like you have more essential exercises than time during the week. These can be helpful though if you want to search for a specific topics such as squat form.

If you are looking to lift weights then I would recommend 5x5 Stronglifts as you will see some solid progression and you can use the app for free. 3 workouts per week rotating between squat, overhead press, deadlift, bench press and rows.

You may feel that the 3 days a week is not enough or that the weight progression to too gradual, but don't rush it and build up gradually to your weights as you will develop better form doing so.

You can pay but it only gives you warm up recommendations and some additional exercises, but you can add these in yourself.

If I have had a break (or injury) I use 5x5 to get me back on track until I am ready to move onto a more focused routine.

    • For someone who is brand new to the gym, getting onto compound exercises straight up is calling for injury imo. Especially that OP has mentioned he hasn't done weight training before. Incorrect form with medium to heavy weights is too much of a risk dont you think?

      • I don't necessarily think so, starting out you will be squatting just the 20kg bar. It increments by 2.5kg so will take a long time to be doing meaningful weight. Personally I think compound exercises are what you should build your routine around.

Better than going to the gym and aimlessly doing various exercises with no goal or purpose.

Being at a gym I am sure there are people onsite to assist with form also.

  • I would ask a staff member at the gym if they can show you how to use them. They should do this.

Many gyms also offer a workout plan based on your goals. They’ll show you how to use the equipment when they develop the plan. Look into this.

    • @jjjaar
      Curious how much that cost?

      • This is included in the membership cost. Currently $22/wk. My old gym was $15/wk.

I’ve always joined council owned privately managed gyms and this has always been included in the membership.

    Grindr

  • The ADF has a fitness app, not sure how good it is.
