Warranty Repair - 2 Weeks Away - Acceptable?

I bought a Shure SE215 with universal cable last year from Store DJ. Within the warranty period the up volume button stopped working. It became fixed and wouldn't depress.

I contacted in December Store DJ who said that they would have to send it away to the manufacturer to be checked. This will take a few weeks. With the Xmas New Year break it would take 4 weeks so I decided to leave it till now.

Is this acceptable? They can easily tell it's faulty when I bring it to a retail store so I thought not? Should be easy to replace there and then.

I think that's a reasonable time-frame to repair the product. They may want to get it professionally inspected too. How do you prove whether it's a manufacturing defect or you broke it through wear and tear/dropping it/water damage/pressing it excessively hard etc.

  • The law doesn't say they need to replace it immediately.

Its up to the manufacturer to rectify the fault or provide a remedy.

Now some retailers will replace items within a short period after purchase 1-4 weeks, but its something they offer on their own.

It's warranty repair, so yes the manufacturer needs to approve it

Telstra don't fix a Samsung phone, they send it off to Samsung to get fixed. Same same

You seem to be confused on how you actually want it resolved.

    • Repair for many products consist of replacing component parts. The cable/wire is detachable from the most expensive part the earbuds using MMCX technology.

      • replacing component parts

Which won't happen over the counter, it'll need to be properly repaired to a standard that the manufacturer sets

Have you tried complaining and asking for "CoMpEnSaTiOnZ"??

It's been broken since December, you obviously don't need it urgently. 2 weeks is fine.

    • Yes but I can use it now. 2 weeks away and I can't use it. I'll have to use crappy earbuds that came with the mobile.

    Another 1st world problem.

  • dude these cables are like $5 on aliexpress for a cheapo. if you were gonna wait anyway you could have placed an order and you'd have it by now. then you send off the original cable and most likely get a new one sent back which you can keep using

worst case youre down $5 on a spare cable you wont need after 2 weeks
best case they reject the repair you dont have to wait even longer or spend way more for an identical local replacement

    • isn't the cable permanently attached to the earbud?

Also this is Shure brand which specialise in microphones. I'm sure the microphone even on this budget headset is a lot more expensive and better quality then the $5 ones.

        • cool, replaceable cable is good, if it wears out again in 10 years time you can still have working headphones!

a lot more expensive and better quality then the $5 ones.

For sure, but even the crummiest $5 one would get the job done for a few weeks.

I also wouldn't rule out some of the slightly more expensive cables being potentially really good. Chinese earphones have been getting a lot of audiophile attention lately, with people quite favourably comparing inexpensive pairs with very expensive models from more familiar brands. Some great value around

This also goes for their cables, which people seem to be happy with for physical and sound quality. In fact a quick reddit check brought up someone looking to replace the cable on this exact Shure pair and getting a bunch of Aliexpress suggestions, and a comment that their aftermarket cable was better than genuine Shure (and other comments suggesting otherwise).

To be clear though, I was suggesting going for cheap crap temporarily. And I just realised you might have been specifically referring to the microphone, not the cable. Which, yea, probably right.
