Pocket Wi-Fi Option for 9 Months?

Hi OzBargainers,

I'll be moving into a temporary living situation for 9 months and trying to figure out the best Wifi arrangement for this time.
I think I will work more

For what it's worth:
- My current phone plan has 30GB of data (which is generous but I feel will not be enough)
- I often work from home (travelling to work just to access the internet would not be worth it given the distance)

How I use my internet:
- Netflix
- Spotify
- Working from home (emails and research on the internet)
- Running errands (paying bills online)

Would be grateful to hear your thoughts. Many thanks.

  • Absolutely no adsl/nbn in the "living situation"?

    • No, would have to call a provider to have this set up. Given the set up costs and associated hassle I thought there might be a better option for me despite the fact I can take advantage of no lock-in contracts.

Might be a good place to start

  • I was in a similar situation where NBN was just around the corner (timewise) and signing up on ADSL would cost $299 line install for my new home. I already have a pocket wifi and though to tap into my 30GB phone plan as I already have a spare sim card.

In the end, I went with naked ADSL with iinet. They arranged for the line install and paid for the $299 Telstra fee line install. They have a no-lock in contract so the only hassle was to have someone stay home to setup the phone line.

ADSL (usage wise) is far superior to using phone data which has high risk of exceeding data limits.

Also, it worked out cheaper for me based on the monthly usage which 30GB would not have been enough for.

This is all based on the assumption that your reasons for looking elsewhere are inconvenience-based and not infrastructure-limited given the temporary living nature.

    • Thanks a lot - your assumption is correct.
$70 is a little steep but given how easy you said it was to set up, it is appearing like a pretty convenient option.

  • Got an Optus E5577 + 100GB Circles.Life SIM, seems to work alright for $28 a month but I did pay $99 for the modem and the initia l 100GB. Even quicker than my previous NBN50 by a smidge.

    • I'm not with OPTUS but I think this ALDI deal I posted above looks good.

  • If it's not too much of a hassle, an extremely cheap way would to buy an optus modem as above E5577 often on sale for $29.50 and buy catchconnect sim cards $5 = 40gb/30days or $15 = 60gb/90 days for the data. You can pretty much buy as many of these as you want and when combined with cashback becomes even cheaper.

    • Wouldn't an OPTUS modem be locked?
Wow thanks for introducing me to catch connect - looks like the cheapest option.

      • Optus modems are locked but they can be unlocked cheap. Regardless, catch uses the optus network and you can set up the apn easily without unlocking.

        • Forgive my ignorance, so I would purchase an OPTUS E5577 and it will be fine to use a catch connect sim straight away? Nothing else to do?
