Best Budget Outdoor Security Camera?

I woke up this morning, walked out to my car to drive to work, and noticed that two of the doors had been opened and someone had rummaged around inside. Thankfully nothing was taken, but I drove to work kicking myself because I've been putting off purchasing an outdoor security cam for a few months now. So, with this newly found anger, I'm making myself purchase a camera now before something like this happens again - and I could use some advice.

I'm not too fussed about whether the camera is IP or records to a memory card - my main criteria is that it's wireless/battery powered as I will probably be moving soon, and it'd be pointless to wire one in.

Can anyone vouch for any cheap-ish cameras? I don't want to spend loads in an ideal world.

    • So you aren't a monarchist then?

  • Been using Arlo for over a year. Not the cheapest but worth the money. We have shitty neighbours across the road with a spoiled teenage brat who likes to play on the road/play loud boom music and parents who have zero respect for us/anyone else on our street. Also great for deterring/spotting burglars/suspicious vehicles. You cant put a price on extra peace of mind

  • Did you lock your car?

Last time I left my car unlocked by mistake same thing happened on the street parking. I have been locking it everyday now and its all good.

  • In reality the cheapish cameras are no better than having nothing… Due to having poor IR recording at night and poor video quality. Unless authorities have something clear and concise ur evidence is a waste of resources.
At best they’d act as a deterrent and in that case try a good dummy camera.

Or you can have some fun such as invest a bit more ans build a glitter bomb. (check YT for details)

    any Reolinkers here???

I have a set of Reolink Argus 2 and I found them quite reliable.

  • Well I have bars, an old fashion security system, fake external Cameras, fake security wifi hotspot.

So the techy savy bugular will see my security wifi, and no matter how they try they ain't going to hack my devices.

  • Can't say I've tried many but Wyze cameras with the outdoor mounts and necessary considerations made to ensure they aren't going to completely drown or fry in their location. Not sold directly in Australia but sold through Amazon Australia

  • Read cliffnotes on ipcamtalk.com

Most of the suggestions here are in the toy end of the spectrum.

Moving soon will solve ya problem anyways. How did they open the car if it was locked? With a skeleton key? Lock pick? I reckon you left it unlocked.

  • Can I ask what the point of the camera would be?
If it happened again, the best you would have is a grainy, pixelated blur of someone you don't know and the police can't identify. Is it really worth the money and time setting it up?

Prevention by way of locking the doors, a gate, sensor lights are usually the best thing to avoid would be theives.

If you really want cameras. Along with constant recording, get one with app notifications so that you can at least do something if there's an incident..

    • Lots of issues in our neighborhood recently, surely security cameras are deterrent to breaking ins, usually they are no help when comes chasing….

Prevention is what we need to look at, smart homes (triggered motion lights and sirens) and or standalone security systems are hopefully work on our favour.

So far no issues. Lets see….

      • You can get dummy ones if you want a deterrent.
It's good to have a good quality system with high res, constant recording and notifications, if you have the cash for all that. But this is expensive for what could end up being pointless in finding the culprit.

For house break ins, an alarm is a must. It stops thieves from spending as much time as they want rummaging through your stuff down to a few minutes or seconds.

        • thats my point, having high res or low risk is the same when it comes to deterrent level, security level increases when you bundle them up with triggered lightings/alarms.

Nothing worse than having your taste in music and sunglasses judged by a thief who refuses your cds and glasses.

Thanks for the thread OP and the replies from ozbargainers on security camera recommendations. I walk my dog very early in the morning ( great dane, can't handle day time temperatures ) and I ran into this dodgy bloke lurking around my neighbors property with a torch. A few days later a home was burgled in my street. Even if the cops won't do anything with the footage I'll still be picking up cameras with motion sensors / phone alerts to hopefully deter these POS from entering my property.

  • How about a DIY home security setup using recycled laptop webcams.
