Where to Buy Solar Panels for DIY

Hi Guys,

I am looking to get solar system for my second house, I got the first one installed little while ago and I’m very happy with it.

I had a thought, most of these solar companies are basically buying the material, hiring subcontracts to do the job and they claim STC and make profit all from a call centre.

So I’m thinking why not buy the materials myself, get the same subcontractor who did my other house and I can claim STCs and get it cheaper???

Now my question is where do an OzBargainer look for a deal?

    You most likely won't .
You won't buy electrical gear like solar panels for less than the companies buying hundreds of the things every week.

Then, warranty…no electrician is coming back to deal with warranty issues for an install only job.

  • Panels are easy to get and cheap. Look on gumtree/fb marketplace. I picked up 3 220w suntech panels for less than $100 for a project I was working on. There are plenty to be found mainly from people upgrading their existing systems.

Getting someone to install it though, with the risk and liability may be another thing.

    • and if its second hand likely no STC's as not on the list anymore
and getting second hand gear installed, signed off and approved for grid connection… yeah, not so easy

  • I sold 10 gel batteries to a guy off gumtree late last year. He said he was installing a solar set-up for one of his rentals. He got his panels from gumtree as well apparently. Cabling and inverters came from a website I can't exactly remember. Something like Aussie solar or Aussie batteries. Sorry.
No idea about liability, law or standards etc. Installed my own 1000watt system on my yatch and this guy apparently had installed in houses before if that helps.

You will not get the paperwork to allow you to connect to the grid. You are on a hiding to nothing.
