Telstra Family and Friends Deals?

Gday all. I got my last phone (SGS9) via a Telstra "family and friends" deal back in December 2018. Compared to whats available from Telstra currently, even with the exact same phone, I'm on a great deal. $69 per month, 2 year contract, no extra for the phone, 30gb of data plus "piece of mind". If I was buying this phone through Telstra today it would be $76 per month but with only 15gb of data.

But to my question. Family and friends deals from telstra used to be pretty regular, I think (every year?), but I don't think it happened in 2019. Does anyone know if Telstra have decided to kill these deals, or is it more of an ad hoc decision from them as to when they're offered? I'm kinda hoping that another f&f deal comes up towards the end of this year when my contract expires, but since it didn't happen last year, I'm not that confident.

cheers

PS - no, I can't go with optus or voda. I live in regional North QLD and Telstra is the only provider with coverage at my house.

  • Apparently all of the below use the Telstra network, so I think you could look at their offerings and still have the network coverage:

    Boost Mobile
    Woolworths Mobile
    TeleChoice
    Belong Mobile
    Pennytel
    ALDI Mobile
    Lycamobile
    Tangerine Telecom
    Think Mobile
    C Mobile

I have looked before. Only Boost offers Telstra's full coverage. The others are limited in regional areas. But I'm not really looking for an alternative provider.

Have you considered the Boost 365 day prepaid plans? They're pretty competitive!

        • Yeah I have looked at them. They seem to be the best value Telstra deals at the moment. That could be an option if nothing better appears by the end of the year.

    they have killed them..

    • Ahh that sucks. Thanks mate.

  • Better to wait until November to make a decision on what to do next.

  • This is almost exactly the same situation for me too.

$45 pm over 24 months, for 25GB pm and a Google Pixel 2.

Seems nothing as good as that comes out any more for around the $40-50 mark.

(Maybe those JB Hifi deals = $199 up front + $65 pm for 12 months, for 60GB and a Google Pixel 4….)

    • Yeah but those are all for port-ins and new activations. I'm not interested in stuffing around porting out and back…

As far as I know these are being phased out. If you leave them alone, they seem to continue, but you probably can’t get a new handset. Last seen Telstra had gone to a different model for employees getting a combine work/personal phone. I think it was designed to make it easier to offload ex employees.

    • The old staff connect plan was easier to transition if staff got the flick, because they were normal consumer plans with a staff rebate. The new method is work pays for our phones now

      • Ah, I was talking about the $10 plans. So if you leave, now, do up you get to keep the phone, or do you hand it back?

    Out of luck mate.

You would be better off buying new phone with 50% off staff discount and then buying boost mobile prepaid 365 days.

Believe me this is the deal no other offer can match un current scenarios.

    • Yeah, those prepaid deals do seem pretty good. Not sure I want to go that way, but if there's nothing better by the end of the year, that could be an option. The other thing I'm thinking is to stick with the current plan and buy a phone outright.

I work in education and the Samsung Ed store seems to offer pretty good discounts on outright devices. Since I teach IT, part of which is app design, I reckon I could deduct a percentage of cost off my tax, actually.

      • Seems like you have priorities sorted out correctly. Well done mate.

One thing which I dont like personally is to keep the current plan going for a while. You are paying the same amount which included phone subsidy during plan length.

Just not my thing, just saying.

        • Yeah I see your point. I didnt realise Telstra now have a $60 60gb sim only plan now. It would make sense to drop back to that. Anyhow, we'll wait and see.
