Blocked from Buying Phones through Contract at JB Hi-Fi

Hi there, went to buy a phone today from JB Hi-Fi and they said my account has been locked because I've bought too many phones from them …

WTF - this happened to anyone else?

Bought like 6 last year, but think it's a bit stupid that they block me from buying anymore phones when they are the ones listening them and selling them.

Got some pretty sweet deals but normally buy 1 or 2 every 3 or 4 months

  • Maybe your account was put into Control Group status?

"normally buy 1 or 2 every 3 or 4 months"

    Why?

  • I think there is a limit on the number of prepaid account one can have. not sure about post paid.

  • It used to be 99 Luftballons then 99 Google Phones* and
now you buy ~6 Mobiles for fun and profit and people call
    you a terrorist.

    Are you really that surprised?

You think its stupid from their perspective for not doing business with a "customer" thats losing them money? Confused with business vs charity?

You want your cake and eat it. Hope you don't need a loan in the near future.

    • What are you talking about?. you're saying the prices they advertise lose them money?

If that's the case they shouldn't offer them on the first place

Cannot blame people for purchasing them at the price they advertise

Just stop for a second and think about the purpose of why they're offering cheap phones with the plans, from a business perspective.

If that's the case they shouldn't offer them on the first place

Well it looks like you've ran out of chances, and they've made the smart decision to not offer to you (specifically) any more.

Can't blame them for not selling to you now, nor can you blame them.

        • No they told me just to use a different drivers licence to buy more

I understand what you're saying but they should have put a limit in place. You cannot ban people retrospectively…

I've always had 5-10 accounts with Telstra. It is not a large amount of phones

            @AussieMark:

            You cannot ban people retrospectively…

Yes they can…they just did. You have the right to offer to buy, they have the right to reject.

But it's literally 12-15 phones over 5 years

Curious, what would you consider a lot of phones for a regular customer?

I haven't even had that many phones in my whole life, let alone over 5 years.

I understand what you're saying but they should have put a limit in place

This is exactly why T&C's are a million pages long. Now there's going to be another 50000 pages added because of you.

@AlienC: As usual, you dont know what you're talking about. But sure, blame it on the complicated fine lines- maybe go check your eyes?

            • @Ughhh: Lol they aren't all for me

              • @AussieMark: We know, they're for the people who you've sold it too. But they dont care.

  • If I was buying commerical quantities sure

But it's literally 12-15 phones over 5 years

  • Bought like 6 last year

And whats the status of those contracts now?

    • 3 open 3 closed why

      • +2

JB makes a trailing commission for the life of the contract, This helps offset/make up for the 'discounted' price on the handset they give you up front.

As you have closed them early, they don't get that. So will be losing out.

Hence why you have been blocked, you don't sell things to customers you lose money on!

  • maybe you failed their credit check because you have too many accounts already?

  • Thanks for everyone's feedback

Guess I should be more careful

Bought two phones outright from JB last week haha

Didn't realize I been black listed

Probably will have photo up soon saying beware this ozbargainer 😂

    • +2

outright ones they won't care, only the ones on contract that you 'end' early like you are doing. Hence why you have been blocked from buying contract phones.

  • I don't have any input, but can I ask why you're buying so many phones?

    • I wanted to ask that as well, but you'll never get a straight answer.

      • Reading the comments it seems like there's a bit of a scheme going with signing up for phones on contracts, and the reselling them. I don't really get how that would work.

    • Sure

Oppo z and Xiaomi I couldn't really decide on so only opened one and test (offered to sell at cost price here)

Huawei mate 30 pro I returned as had a lot of trouble with it

Google pixel 4 I wasn't really happy with so sold it

P30 phones I was able to sell (2-3 in total) as I got worried about hauwei

Other ones I kept are for family but some of the Telstra deals are better than others ie the ones with peace of mind data and international calls

Started closing most of my Telstra contracts and only keeping the best value ones open

      • But you're signing up for a new SIM for each phone?

        • Oppo and Xiaomi no, others yes. Mate 30 was also outright

          Over a year

  • You've got a problem Mark.

    • Haha probably addicted

  • Too many sims in your name?

  • They said it's JB hi-fi blocking me not Telstra but yeah lesson learned

Would have thought some people doing a ton more than me

Mine is 6 across a whole year (one every 2-3 months) and then 1 a year before that

  • So your signing up, maybe picking up free gift cards and then selling the phones. But how do you get outta the contracts?

  • OP has asked for the thread to be removed, we're closing the thread on the basis it's resolved.

    Thanks
