Hey guys
Anyone have any suggestions on some good setups to mount on a motorcycle helmet?

Well, technically you're* maybe allowed*. And sawtell is quoting against the old Aust. Standards that said that if you wear a helmet without the accompanying paperwork it was sold with, including all the paperwork and so forth, it is also "illegal". This includes the removal of the protective film across the visor.

All of this bullshit was updated a few years ago and the Australian standards were changed, and some manufacturers actually supply kits for their helmets that allow the mounting of cameras and bluetooth devices.

What you "cant" do is alter the helmet in any fashion but grinding, drilling or plating the helmet. Mounts must be stuck on and must break away (frangible) if they come in contact with anything. You can also get kits that mount to the goggle strap or that you wear on your chest, negating if the helmet rule is grey or not.

If you want a good search and a fun read, it's all contained in Australian Standard: AS/NZS 1698:2006 or UNECE22.05

And put it another way… NSW police use helmet mounted cameras on their motorcycle helmets.

        • Thanks mate great think I might just fit it on the bike I ain't losing my license for it

@Dbargain4me: The irony of it is, so long as you are wearing a helmet, you could be dressed in nothing else but your undies, and that's fine. But, put a camera on a helmet, and everyone loses their minds…

            • @pegaxs: Haha so funny love to see that on YouTube … The only thing I can think of if it flys of and hits someone

          • @Dbargain4me: It becomes illegal because the modified helmet doesn't meet the Australian standard. A guy challenged his fine in court a few years ago in Victoria and the verdict was overturned on appeal in the County court.

Australian Standards are administered by a foreign company who charges a hefty fee for a PDF or print copy. IIRC the guy and his lawyer went to VicRoads and asked to view their copy of the Australian Standard and they were refused. The Victorian County Court judge overturned the magistrate's verdict for that reason. Victoria Police stopped issuing fines for helmet cams after that case. Unless you want to be the guy who makes a court challenge in NSW, it's probably best to avoid wearing it on your helmet. Helmet cams are legal in all other states I hear.

            • @trongy: AS/NZS 1698:2006;

              5.4 External projections

Only rigid projections necessary for the retention system and the attachment of eye protection, communication and ventilation systems, and life support equipment, shall be permitted, and such projections shall not have a height of more than 5 mm.

Non-rigid projections greater than 5 mm in height are permissible, provided they comply with the performance requirements of the Oblique Impact Test in BS 6658:1985, using the bar anvil.

Rigid projection and irregularities on the continuous curve of the outer surface of the helmet, except for ventilation holes and associated depression, shall not be greater than 5 mm in height when measured normal to the general outer surface of the helmet (see Figure 1).

NOTE: Irregularities in the shell should be smoothed to minimize resistance to tangential impact forces brought about by friction or snagging.

It then goes on to say; (basically, if you don't have a brochure or label on/with the helmet that says the following, it's non-compliant)

9 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND CARE

In addition to the marking requirements of Clause 8, each helmet shall be accompanied by a brochure or label which shall include the following in letters no less than 2 mm:

              (e) The helmet is suitable/unsuitable* for use with communications devices. (If suitable for use with communications devices, list the appropriate devices.)

              (f) No attachments should be made to the helmet except those recommended by the helmet manufacturer. Do not drill or cut the shell.

              • @pegaxs: It appears that the Victorian road rules have been changed since Max Lichtenbaum was found not guilty by the County Court of Victoria in 2016. The relevant Victorian road rule now says that the helmet must be made in compliance with the relevant standards and kept in good repair. It doesn't say that the helmet must be kept in compliance with the standard.

I'm not aware of any rider being issued with infringement notices for wearing a helmet mounted camera by the police in Victoria since these events.

  • It's expensive and also a comms/bluetooth unit but I use https://www.sena.com/product/10c/faq

    • Looks great to expensive for me :(

  • I use a contour roam. Easy to use as it is 1 button on/off.

The stupid thing is that the world is nor soft and rounded, if you come off a motorcycle your head is likely to huit all sorts of differently shaped hard objects, there is no difference if this is a rock on the road, the corner of a 5-post bullbar or a camera mounted on your helmet.

    • The difference is that a smooth helmet is not likely to catch anything while you are sliding down the road. A helmet with a protruding camera could possibly snag on something and break your neck.

The helmet is not there just to prevent penetration injuries.

  • I used a special adhesive velcro which worked brilliant. Cheap quick and easy. I think it was called 3m Pedal grip tape? or something like that. Bought on ebay for about $5

    • I think this is the same as 3m dual lock. You can use the same type to stick to itself but mixing the 400 and 250 densities is exceptionally strong and what I use.
