Mobile Number When Opening a Bank Account

Can I use a SIM card not registered to me as my mobile phone number when opening a bank account?

I don't own a phone and was going to use my girlfriends phone number on my application.

  • I think its cheaper to get a phone and a sim these days. It's not the 90s.

    • He can't afford it, otherwise would have one already. Why even open a bank account at age 40? Probably just started working and employer asked for a bank account to pay salary into. Cash he said, employer replied Your Dreaming!

    Get sim.
    Put in girlfriends phone.
    Set it up.
Do whatever you need to do.
    Take sim out.
    Smash sim.
    Done.

    • Great advice. And then the bank sends an SMS with the secret code to complete the bank transfer….

I think people are being a bit harsh to downvote you for having an opinion or lifestyle they don't agree with. I only bother to downvote if people are insisting on giving bad information.

In any case if it's absolutely necessary to own a phone to have a bank account, then one possibility I'd suggest is buying a cheap phone and a cheap yearly plan e.g. Boost or Kogan, and just leaving the phone off most of the time.

    • What if I had VOIP on my computer, that ain't a phone. I wonder if I could use that?

  • Has phone always been mandatory to open a bank account or is it just after the smartphone boom? OP, have you actually gone to a bank and said "I have no phone", and what did they say?

Only once. The bank teller was a 20 year old girl who didn't understand what I was saying. I guess she found it too hard to believe someone doesn't have a phone.

  • With payID your mobile number can be linked to a bank account, depending on how you set up your account. If you use your girlfriend's phone number it could lead to money meant for her going into your account.

Congratulations on not owning a cell phone and choosing to be different. So many people just mindlessly copy of thoughts and lifestyles of those around them (heteronymous is the word).

Aldi have a 1 year Sim starter pack for $5 from memory; you could use it just for SMSs without having to add money to the card/

    • Okay I'll look into getting a SIM from Aldimobile. Thanks

  • 8 ways you can receive free SMS via virtual phone numbers for website verification.

Although it isn't the only security option, I would recommend something such as a phone so that you can use 2FA. 2FA is an important security measure that does make it harder for scammers to compromise your banking account. You could get a $5 Aldi mobile SIM and a "dumb phone" (or whatever a non-smartphone is called). SMS is not considered as secure as using an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, but it still is certainly better than no 2FA.

Okay I think I have the solution just get a cheap Sim for the year then get a mobile broadband modem that can send and receive texts through your laptop. Problem solved

You seem like a very stubborn person, almost boasting about how you don't own a phone..

    • Not owning a phone is like my status symbol. I like to rub it in every ones face.

Just get a non smart phone, like in the 90s. You will still be different and can do 2fa for banking. Win win.

    • I think you mean a flip phone. I'll think about it.

  • All good till you’re in an emergency. Remember old man Crackers who lives on the mountain as the government is trying to get him?

    • Depends on the emergency. A phone will be useless in 90% of emergency situations.

How do you get that percentage?

  • Pretty sure you unable to set up an account online with a bank without a mobile number, That said most banks have a work around which requires you to visit a branch to set up an account if you don't have a mobile number.
