ToolPRO Automotive Tool Kit - 138 Piece - Any Good?

I am looking for a good spanner kit just for use around the home.

Saw this go up on sale. Anyone know if this is any good? Is it also overkill for home duties? Any other bargains out there?

Fine for at home use. Cheap way to get started with almost everything

    • Agree. Should be reasonable quality, and if anything does break you can replace with a quality item later if required.

If I didn’t already have a bunch of tools and was looking at doing car repairs it would be a great starting point, especially at $138.

  • the sae stuff's a bit useless nowadays but that looks like an alright kit. i've got a few of their sockets and it seems fine.

for home use i'd say overkill, its not that often you need spanners or sockets, if you work on a car it's great though.

for home use i'd just look at getting a decent screwdriver / allen key set and a couple of decent quality shifting spanners and pliers, maybe a hammer and mallet as well.

  • The kit does include a fair selection.

It looks like all the larger sockets are 12 point which is not great (especially as this kit goes up to 32mm!) this along with the unknown steel would have me only use the kit on general duty stuff.

    (Knuckles are expensive).

Also the kit is missing the fairly common 5.5mm so you may have to get that as well.

    • What is 5.5 common for??

Been a mechanic for almost 30 years and cant think of a single time I have ever needed a 5.5mm socket…

(ps: 7/32" is 5.56mm. So for the sake of 0.06mm, the 7/32" should work)

      • 5.5mm is the standard DIN934 head size for M3 Bolts it is actually the 5mm and 6mm that are more oddball(Used for M2.6 and M3.5 Bolts respectively).

        https://www.fullerfasteners.com/tech/din-934-specifications/

For the same reason 9,12,16,18,21,23mm etc are less useful as they do not directly match up with a standard size bolt (Nonetheless used for various applications[eg wheel lugs])

A quick google reveals M3 is used in cars on loads of trim panels as well as electrics such as alternators, heaters and radiators and misc items such as cabin air filters.

My experience is they are even more common across small motors (mowers, blowers, chainsaws etc) and electronics like amplifiers (and apparently copiers).

And while you are correct that you may get away with the SAE, you could also say that about most of the other sizes too.

    • Mudvin, do you think this is a better option? 6 sided sockets, no SAE sockets.a few extra fiddly hex head bits etc.

  • have seen a lot of people on my 4wd sites getting them to throw in the ute/car. good basic/car tool kit. The case is handy too.
