Swapping Buttons on a 5 Gang Switch

Hi all,

I have a 5 Gang Switch installed by the builder but the buttons were not set up logically. For example, the lights on the left was operated by the button on the right, vice versa. I am wondering if it is safe to swap the buttons on my own or do I need to hire an electrician for it? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Legally, you need an electrician. Unauthorised work can void your insurance if it was found to be the cause of damage and subsequent claim.

    Edit
Plus get the builder to organise to fix it up, possibly under defect liability

Seeing you are asking this question you don't have much experience with electrical work, I would get a electrican it would only take them 5 minutes to do.

It should cost you the call out fee in theory

  • Depends on the brand/style of switches and how much cable is spare. They often just unclick out of the back of the faceplate and can be swapped without rewiring.

    It's a 2 minute job.

Pop the facia off then unscrew the 2 screws that hold the plate against the gyprock. Pull the switch plate out of the wall, making sure you don't knock off the metal bracket that the 2 screws go in to. Take a pair of pliers and pull the mechs. Angle the pliers from 90 degrees to 45 degrees while gripping them and they'll pop out - leave the wires in. Then re-position them in the way you'd like.

NB: Make sure the lighting circuit in the switchboard is OFF before you do it.

Decent advice, but you really should keep it to yourself. There is still a reasonable potential that there is some wiring behind the switch that is still live.

Yes I agree also wiring could be over 2 circuits.

Safest thing to do would be to just switch the light bulbs around so they match the switches.

How in the world is that going to work? Moving a light bulb doesn't move the wiring.

  • Thanks for the advice provided, guys.
