Moving from Virgin Money

I've had a virgin money card for almost 12 months and looking at options to move. I'm looking at the ANZ travel rewards at the moment with 75,000 velocity points and a free domestic virgin flight but a fee of $225 per year. As virgin will be $129 fee without any points to me it seems like a good option.

Are there any issues with cancelling a card after a year to move to a new one or does anyone else have any thoughts on potential better options for velocity points? I've looked at the wikis and comparisons so hopefully I'm on the right track.

No. You’ll find a lot of people here do this.

Sorry but I can’t comment on virgin cards as I mostly use qantas, but check out Points Hacks which is usually up to date on the current deals.

  • Im looking to ditch my Virgin Flyer card too.
ANZ travel rewards is good if you want to maintain loyalty to Virgin Velocity.
The free return flight, lounge passes, included insurances, fee free international payments and the bonus sign up points all make it a good deal for $225/year.

The only other thing I was considering was the HSBC Platinum card.
The $129 annual fee is refunded if you spend $6K a year on the card, which is easy to achieve so its basically free.
Domestic and International travel insurance and 2 airport lounge passes. The rewards program can be used to transfer points to Velocity equates to 0.5 velocity point per $ spent.
No bonus points on sign up though and no included flight.

    • Bonus points are a big earner if you think about it. For example 50,000 points is usually approx $50,000 spend depending on earn rate. But if you can get 50,000 points plus whatever you would spend for the same annual fee, wouldn't that be a better option?

I was looking at the Virgin Flyer card, but flight credit isn't all that great for me considering I'd then have to spend extra to take the family with me. As /u/jjjaar mentioned, Point Hacks is a great place to start research

Just found this one too, Westpac altitude with 80,000 points, annual fee of just $50 (free with no points program).

No complimentary flight but two upgrades to economy X and also two lounge passes. Travel insurance if you spend $500 on your prepaid expenses of the trip.
