Best Budget Health Insurance w/Extras

Looking for some options for budget private health with decent extras.

I'm a 36yo adult and live in Queensland (so no need for ambulance cover). Fairly healthy and don't have any ongoing issues, so definitely don't need a high level of cover, but some extras are important to me.

These are:

  • Physiotherapy (tend to need it 2-3 times a year)
  • Optical (wear low-level prescription glasses that need replacing every ~2 years)
  • Dental (preferably 100% claim for regular checkups/cleans)

I'm currently just on hospital-only coverage ($0 excess) with Medibank and pay ~$90 a month. Wouldn't want to jump to more than around ~$110 a month with included extras, but happy to add a hospital excess.

Bupa seems pretty well recognised too, but are there any other suggestions for someone in my situation?

Thanks in advance!

Medicare and use the savings to pay for your three extras out of pocket?

    • Except I'm 36, so well over the LHC bracket and would rather not pay through the nose for healthcare later in life (perpetually increasing costs based on time NOT covered by private health).

      • Should really add up exactly how much it's going to cost you leading up to the point when private health may actually be of benefit. Also the LHC loading thing could be changed at any time, they might find it's putting too many people off private cover later on, and will drop it to get them out of the public system.

I found it cheaper for me to get hospital and extras separately through different providers. For extras I’m with HBF, it’s not for profit health fund, I choose the 4 extras I want covered so no need to pay for extras I won’t use.

Didn’t know you could do thay

    • Who do you use for your hospital cover?

      • I’m with Bupa, silver plus. Got a corporate rate through work.
I’ll probably review both plans soon as I haven’t done it for a few years.

As in things like general dental, physio, optical etc?

How? when I get a quote, I'm only presented wth 5 tiers, extras already preset.

      • I just checked the site and when doing a quote, hit skip to extras to see “extras only” plans. Though my plan doesn’t look like it’s offered anymore - Saver Flexi Extras Mid. That’s a shame. I did get it a few years back and at the time other providers had similar options too. Maybe others still do.

  • Check out Peoplecare (not for profit) minimum fee increase, im with them on a package that doesnt exist anymore, but i have extras only.
