S20 isn't better than S10. (Samsung Galaxy)

Every year they revise the flagship smartphones.
With Samsung they seem to change things for the sake of it. Small tweaks here and there that don't require a hardware revision.
Often they'll remove features, and now they seem to even reduce the quality.

Comparing the S10 to the S20, the S10 succeeds every time.
2 main tests I've done so far are the camera and speakers.

The camera, I tested with 10 times zoom on both.
Both zoom nicely and the preview image is sharp. However after taking some pictures and viewing the results side by side,
the S20 uses post-processing to blur the image. It looks airbrushed, details are lost and this tacky blur filter is applied.
Also, a small note but although the S20 does 8k video, it's only 30fps. So I think it's better to use 4k 60fps which the S10 also already offers.

The speakers.
Listening to music, the S10 has better sound quality.
I had to check the equalizer and sound settings to make sure they were the same. (They are)
The S20 sounds incredibly tinny and bad, practically unlistenable.
Spotify has an option to switch from device to another so it's easy to compare.
The S10 has a beefy and full(ish) sound, while the S20 sounds compressed and tiny, as if it's on a phone call with hold music.

I'm pretty shocked that a $1300+ revision is not only not better, but actually worse than the previous reiteration.
I'm still to test other aspects of the phone, but I'd like to put this out there as a warning.

I did test the phone the day before buying it, but things like the camera and speaker I was unable to test in store.

Also I think I'll get used to it, but the clock in the top left is incredibly small on the S20. About 2 millimetres in size, smaller than previous Galaxy phones.
It seems they optimised it for the S20 Ultra and didn't resize the interface for the smaller phone.

The one thing I like about the phone is the 120 refresh rate, though it only works if you reduce the screen resolution. So the resolution is actually lower than the S10 if you enable it.

I bought the phone because my S10's battery has depleted, not lasting a full day. (it's 12 months old)
Starting to think I should have bought another S10, or another brand's flagship.

Feel free to post your reviews of the S20.

Also it's a bit insulting of Samsung to offer the S20+ for the same price as the S20 after the release date. Both everyone who bought the S20 and S20+ are wronged by this action. Brand loyalty and trust matters.

  • Reading your review of the speaker. It sounds like you have a dud. Call centre music is garbage. If the speaker crackles & has poor quality like that I would return it.

Spent $1300+ instead of a <$100 battery replacement?

    Doesn't seem the best option!

posted from my 2.5yo S8 that doesn't seem amazingly different from the models since

S20 is the S10e of this year.

Bit unfair to compare the 'lite' version of 2020 to the flagship of 2019 isn't it?

    • Launch price of the s10 and s20 is the same as far as I can tell.

  • Would you post up links of the picture comparison?

  • i just upgraded from s10 to s20. i find it better

noticeable differences - better button placement, the power button/kill screen is where thumb would sit when gripping phone, finger scanner seems more fluid and unlocks almost instantly now to screen

the only downside is theyve taken away the headphone jack, replaced it with a type c connection - not that i use headphones much, but it was nice to connect the Sennheiser headphones i have to the old s10 every so often

however i upgrade every year because my battery life span dwindles towards 8 months in on the phone, always happens (yay for planned obsolesces) i wish battery size was an option id love the s20+ battery in this phone, should be upgradable like the storage

  • The S20 camera issue is a known one. Apparently Samsung will release an update to fix the blurriness/smoothing.

  • I paid $300 for an S9 and 80,000 Telstra points. I got the points from signing up to new mobile plan+using direct debit (130,000 points in total)

  • My S10 has always had crap battery life, it's annoying. S8 was much better.

Just upgraded from an S8 yesterday. Speaker is definitely worse, I assume its a trade off for providing as much screen real estate as possible. Haven't really used the camera yet but the addition of the wide angle lens is probably the most useful aspect for me. Other improvements I've noticed are mostly speed, software improvements, screen/refresh rate and fingerprint scanner location (compared to S8). I've probably only used the phone for 40 minutes so I can't provide much info but I'm happy so far. I did receive a software update for the camera yesterday so maybe yours is coming?

  • How do you deplete a phone battery in 1 year? They are rated at 250-500 charge cycles (thats 0-100) before getting ~80% efficiency for hundreds more after that.

1 thing is true, Samsung thanks you for your business.

  • It doesn't work with my headphones!
At least when Apple removed the headphone jack (on the iPhone X) they included an adapter.
With the S20 there is no 3.5mm headphone jack adapter included, so tough luck if you were hoping to use wired headphones.

    • My S20+ came with a USB-C headphone. It is not the best quality but it does the job for phone calls.

These days most people go for the wireless headphones - kind of makes sense to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack and offer a USB-C alternative.
That said I am old school and still have 3.5mm headphones - I want the headphone jack back!

Option B: If you have a USB headset, you can use a USB-C to USB adapter to plug it in. It is a little clunky and you generally don't want to be fussed with carrying an adapter around.

The phone takes takes decent indoor shots but overall I don't think the camera is anything to rave about.

  • The Samsung on screen Fingerprint sensor is a joke.
I end up having to key in my pin most of the time.

I would say that it works 1 out of 4 times. When you use the phone multiple times a day that's a lot of times that it doesn't work.
That's 75% of the time it doesn't work….. I have even tried the power-management tweak to give it priority.

I have come from a Google phone with fingerprint sensor where it works 100% of the time, and it is quick!
I decided to go for Samsung this time around - kind of wishing I hadn't but the fingerprint is like keyless entry on a key to me.

Yes I have tried re-scanning my fingers, and using different fingers too.
