Travelling Europe. SIM Card Recommendations?

Hi all,

I'm travelling for 2+ months. Arriving first into England and then France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Denmark. Spending at least 1.5 weeks in each country. Can anyone recommend a travel sim for all/each country?

Here in Australia I use a standard $30 prepaid sim that includes 15ish gigs. I was thinking of using Vodafone's $5 roaming. It wins with convenience between all the countries but it seems costly for the amount I will be away.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

There's a new brand called Corona Sims. Might check that out, they have good coverage in every country.
But seriously, are you sure that's the best idea right now considering the imminent travel bans that are about to take place?

If you are still serious, Orange/3 are quite good with coverage in most of the EU. Check that they might have an add on for roaming charges.

Assuming you arrive in the UK first, have a look at a Tesco SIM; choose the plan that suits your usage. Covers 48 countries apparently.

Which country are you visiting first?

Since about 2017, it's free roaming, calls, texts across all EU countries. Whatever SIM you buy in your arrival country should be suitable for use during your whole trip. No doubt there will be vendors in arrival airport. Just get something with a good data bundle and you'll be good to go.

Popular networks across Europe are EE (Maybe still be under legacy names TMobile and Orange), Vodafone, O2 Telefonica and 3 (/Three) Mobile

This will likely be cheaper than your $5 (c 3EUR x 60 days) roaming. Especially if you arrive into one of the cheaper countries or the UK, a decent bundle will only cost c. 20-30 Euros

Also forgot to Include Lebara & Giffgaff which are readily available bundle sims

      • Thanks for the tips. Arriving into London first.

You won't be short of options then.

Check out a newsagents in the terminal when you land e.g. WH Smiths. They should have sim cards you can buy then top up with a bundle. I used 3 mobile when I lived in the UK. Check their bundles out here —-> https://3g.co.uk/sim-only/pay-as-you-go

    Giffgaff or three UK.

If not flexiroam is pretty good if you can buy in advance.

    • Thanks fot the tips. Am I understanding this correctly, 80GB for 20gbp with giffgaff (uk+eu) or 11GB for $320 USD with flexiroam? I understand with flexiroam I would be able to use it globally which warrants the large price or is there a more appropriate plan that I'm missing to see?

With flexi roam I suggest buying country packs rather than global packs.

I believe gift gaff is 20gb EU & 60gb UK for a month for 20gbp.
Considering you're planning to stay in England for a while it's a great plan. I used it as my Sim when I lived there.

1.5 weeks will turn to 3.5 weeks self quarantine.

    Try Sims Direct https://simsdirect.com.au/collections/europe
    You buy 2 cheaper price.

I bought this but you just missed the deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/520458
The same thing, for a good price is available here https://www.ukprepaidsimcard.com.au/europe-phone-simcard-pla…
The real advantage of this one is they facilitate another recharge for you for another 30 days.
usually this SIM expires after 30 days unless you can recharge in person at a UK 3 store or have a UK credit card to recharge online.

Used Giffgaff for the first 3 months in Europe. Like you we started off in the UK, which satisfied their requirements for UK usage. You can order a free sim, which saves going to look for one once you arrive. Easy to use app, and great communication if you have any problems. https://www.giffgaff.com/freesim-international

  • I'm looking for Sim cards now for 1 month EU trip and found this post.

I have to know, how did this holiday go OP??? Did you go, or did it all lock down???
