Would You Watch?

Howdy, toying with the idea of doing a YouTube channel about repairing cars, boats and other random mechanical/electrical things. As an example, I'll be getting a car in the next couple of days that numerous mechanics have tried to fix, and the owner has spent thousands on, and now just wants it gone. Would anyone be interested in seeing the method to find the fault, and repair? Or is that too technical for general viewing? I don't see the point in doing standard "how to service your car", or "how to change brake pads" that have already been done to death.

I'd watch it to see who brendanm is :D

I'd say part of a youtuber's success is how much of an entertaining personality they have.

Haha, I would likely do it like thisoldtony, I have no wish for lots of people to see who I am.

  • unless I have the same exact issue with the same exact car, I won't watch it.
But if it's not too in depth technical/details and entertaining like https://www.youtube.com/user/CarThrottle, then I'd watch it.

    • Yeah that's what I thought, may be too specific, was hoping it would give people better diagnostic skills than simply "throw parts at it until it works".

      • I think addressing a specific problem is what you want. I watch a lot of these repair/diagnostic videos but it's always for the specific problem I am trying to fix. I get to those video by searching that specific problem. Too generic and it could just get lost in the sheer volume of videos.

It would take you 60 - 75 years to watch all the videos on youtube that have been uploaded in the last 24 hours.

Also as others have said the lighting, video, sound and editing all need to be good otherwise your video gets downvoted and most likely drops further and further down the search results.

    • Buys a wrecked car
    • Video records himself fixing and restoring the car back to its original glory and explaining why he does this and that and not that or this
    • Becomes an episodic adventure
    • Sells restored car to someone who wants it
    • Buys another wrecked car
    • Season 2 awaits for the next car…
    • +2

Basically this, but one car/item per episode.

    • The format works pretty well for…. ah fudge can't remember his name - catch phrase is something like "wrench every day"?

      • +2

        Tavarish?

Spends more time talking about what he's gonna do than actually using tools !

        • Ah yeah Tavarish! Tbh I watched him a few years ago when he was working on less flashy cars and haven't kept up lately.

He does talk a lot though, even back then haha.

          • @HighAndDry: I’ve seen a few of his videos of late. Watched a couple and they keep popping up in my feed. No need to watch anymore. They are all the same. Buys ‘sight unseen’ fast damaged or incomplete car, is surprised at the damage, promotes the sponsor, introduces a ‘friend’ from another channel, fixes a bit by replacing stuff with new parts and suckers you into watching the next ep because it’s not complete yet.

  • I'd watch the videos if they had sporadic buttcrack shots.

    • If that's what the people want…

        Nah, just this ^ guy!

I want so badly to be the kind of person who would watch this but deep down I know I'm not :(

    • +2

I could throw in random ozbargain in jokes?

      • -2

I was thinking more along the lines of an ozbargain baby being made on the backseat of that car kinda thing. I would watch that! :p

        • +3

At least the video would be short I suppose.

          • +1

@brendanm: Yep. I've got the attention span of a toddler :)

    • Haha why? If your life is half as exciting as you're post history makes it out to be, then it would be a step down.

      • I aspire to a less dramatic life. Drama is tiring.

Please don't have background music playing that is louder than your voice.

    • +2

Yeah, if I did so it, it would have decent production, not rubbish like that, filmed with a potato.

      • +1

On second thoughts, I think you should it. You sound passionate and knowledgeable .Give it a go and post the link here.

        P.s: where's the poll?

Sounds similar to Mighty Car Mods??

Some of their most entertaining episodes are where they jump onto gumtree/facebook market place/car sales, sort from cheapest to most expensive, and buy the cheapest one sight unseen and then film their discovery journey.

Yes this would work. I watch a lot of you tube videos. I think being able to find the sort of repair you are doing by searching will really help your views to go up as people will search what their problem is. Then that one video (if they like it) will draw them into the others.

  • There are literally a billion YouTube viewers. You’ll get viewers for years to come.

  • Would anyone be interested in seeing the method to find the fault, and repair?

Best way to figure this out is via keyword analysis (or demand) and competition analysis (or supply).

And I can tell you that the answer is yes, people like this sort of content.

There is a whole genre of Youtube where the creators buy stuff just to see if they can repair it and possibly make money. A story can be created around you buying the thing, seeing if you can repair it and then if you can make profit.

Check out My Mate Vince for example (disclaimer: not my mate)

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChY9Cgv-iyPDvf1Bkyx20OQ

Note that half the fun in his videos is he has no idea what he's doing but he still fixes stuff.

  • One of my favourite series of all time was James May's Reassembler, which was just May slowly trying to put random things like lawnmowers back together with no clue what he was doing. His personality is obviously a huge draw here, but if you or anyone else out there has that sort of passion/interest in this sort of thing I'd be all over it!

I might watch it. For me the production values are pretty much as important as the content. I’ve seen too much rubbish to continue watching a channel that has poor lighting, too much camera shake or background noise etc.

I’ve stuck with Mighty Car Mods, the Skid Factory and Bad Obsession Motorsports. Good production, good content and a bit of humour that works for me. I’m sure there are others but I don’t really have time for them I guess. I might fall into another channel, but it would probably be by searching for something specific.

Some of the American channels seem to be too much. It’s all about promotion, and how much money you make. Also have a lot of kid content.

Will you tell us in every video to "like, comment and subscribe"? If not then I'll watch.

    • "Before we get into the video, I'm just going to tell you about Last Pass!"

      • You can get Eneloops to sponsor your videos!

  • I’d definitely watch this kind of thing.

  • Just do it. And share the link when it's done.

  • Eric the car guy, scanner danner, B is for Build, Schrodinger's box (particularly) do what you're describing.

Check their stats on social blade, see what you can learn?

  • What a ridiculous idea. You exhibit ideals of grandeur.

  • Thanks for the feedback all, I will take it into consideration. Thankyou especially to ozhunternsw, yes I am quite grand.

  • If you're edd china , yes definitely would watch

  • I just spent 30 minutes watching Chris fix repair a $500 shit box so I guess I would watch your channel too.

    https://youtu.be/Bbi0kEaTgio

Do a collaboration with shmee150 or Casey to get yourself started.

    • Chris Fix is really good and cuts out a lot of crap a lot of the time, but for an even better, no-nonsense car guy, check out Mad4Motors. This guy gets straight into it and most of it is simple DIY repairs with incredible results which almost anyone can do with cheap stuff and tools. I wish he made more videos, he is a joy to watch and listen to, Irish I think. Real straight up stuff.

  • Given the amount of weird shit on YouTube there's definitely nothing wrong with doing videos like this. But if you're doing it to make money or get famous, I would say don't bother. Unless you're very talented, stupidly good looking, or covering a very popular niche, you have as much chance of becoming famous on TV. Do it for fun :)
