Please Recommend a Good Gaming & Work Monitor - Budget $1000

Looks like I'll be working from home for atleast a few weeks. Id like to take this opportunity to set up a little home workspace as I'd like to work from home more often even after the virus scare is gone.

I use a Macbook pro 13" for work, and want to have a monitor to hook this up to. Most of my work involves coding, NO video or picture editing etc.

I am not a big gamer, but am waiting keenly for the new MS Flight Simulator game (not yet released). Seeing its videos on youtube, I'm thinking it'll probably require a high end gaming monitor (in addition to a gaming PC with a very good video card which I haven't spec'ed yet). I want to be able to use the above work monitor in this gaming PC too.

Budget say max of around $1000.

Been doing a bit of research on this, and I understand from a gaming perspective the important things are:
- IPS Panel
- Freesync or G sync
- At least 144 Hz refresh rate
- At least QHD or 1440p
- 1 ms response time

And from a work perspective,
- At least 27", at most 38" in size, 16:9
- Max 1440p as this will be driven off a Macbook pro when I'm using it for work and I read on this forum that any bigger resolution the performance is bad, with lag etc

I don't care about speakers, as I have an external one that I can use. Looks aren't very important either. I'll be using it on a desk, not wall mounted.

My budget is around $1000.

Doing a search on mwave.com.au for the above parameters, there are a few that match. Have any of you used any of these and can recommend any? Or are there any other ones I should consider?

  • How about you wait for the game's release before considering your screen options?

Unlikely that you'll need a 144Hz refresh rate screen for a flight sim.

    • I need to buy one sooner than that. As in post, the monitor will also be used for work connected to my macbook, and I'll need to have this set up soon (next 2-3 days) to enable me to work from home.

  • I'll always recommend the one I have at the moment because of its performance and price. It's a third of your budget, IPS, 27inch, 1ms (although realistically 2-3ms), 144hz, 1440p, QHD. The only downside is the stand. It's pretty static and can't rotate (so might be a problem if you like vertical screen for coding). Easily solvable with a mounting arm.

I think it's the only one in its price range that also includes IPS panel and all the other benefits. Colours are pretty nice too, esp since IPS, but you don't care about that so it's an added bonus.

    • Thanks very much. BTW did you mean this one below for $459? (The one in your link didn't seem to be IPS/1440p)

Bit confused though, the title of the product has IPS and WQHD in it (ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD 27" WQHD FreeSync 144Hz 1MS IPS LED Gaming Monitor), however, further down it says:
      "Type: TN
      Resolution: 1920 x 1080"

      • VX2758-2KP-MHD is most definitely a 1440p monitor.

        • Thanks

It's not a cheap monitor, will set you back at least $700 to 800.. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/lg-27gl850. Currently it's $704.65 with PZAP15 coupon via Computer Alliance eBay.

    • Got this screen and its better than i expected, before this i was using a u2711 for like 11 years.

    • Comparing the 27" LG 27GL850 with the 31.5" LG 32GK850F-B. They're both QHD, 144Hz and 1ms response time. However the smaller 27" costs significantly more. Is this due to it being IPS (the 31.5" is VA)?

  • Thanks for the recommendations folks. Both the LG 27GL850 & Viewsonic VX2758-2KP-MHD seem to tick all my boxes. Reading thru their reviews now.

  • I've bought ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD and am a bit disappointed in it as it has a stuck (red) pixel near the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately it appeared after the 30 day DOA warranty after which dead/stuck pixels are no longer covered.
It's also got another mark near the corner. It doesn't look like a dead pixel, more like a scratch but the surface feels smooth so am not sure

  • Any recommendations for a monitor that fits this bill but is bigger (say 32 inches)?

      I'm also looking for a 30 inch plus IPS 144hz - budget ~$1000
