Looking for Apple Watch Recommendations - I Don’t Know Anything ehe..

My neighbour was showing me her apple watch & am now super tempted.
Main functions - I’m not sure if it does these..
FYR: I have a baby & 2 dogs so would like to be a bit more handsfree than a phone but still some functions of a phone

Pay
Take calls/messages
Track sleep & HR
Listen to spotify/music

  1. Can someone tell me what a “good deal” would be. Eg. <$500 for Model X
  2. I had a quick look on the apple website & there’s massive differences in price, could you give me a run down of what is just aesthetics & what “base” model you would look at (hardware etc)
  3. Also, has it been a long time since the “newest” watch has been released? Should I wait a few months?
  4. Is there something else that would be good with an Iphone 8?

Thank you community!

Thats the apple watch I have, if you want to use it without having your phone on you go for cellular, but that would incur charges for your carrier, I have just got the GPS one.

The series 5 is the newest, if you can find a series 4 it would be better than a 3.

    As for your list

    Pay (All)
Take calls/messages (All, but you need your phone nearby unless you have the cellular model)
    Track sleep & HR (All)
Listen to Spotify/music (All, but you need your phone nearby unless you have the cellular model, or you have put some music on to your watch, I dont recommend that as the watch has little storage space to begin with)

  • The above poster has covered most of it

I had the Series 3 GPS+Cellular for the past 2 years and recently upgraded to the Series 5 (GPS only this time because I hardly if ever used the cellular functions - i.e. I pretty much have my phone with or near me all the time)

Note for Pay - your current bank(s) need to support ApplePay (not all do - tho many now do) - see the list here https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT206638

Also you also need an iPhone (at a minimum to setup the watch)

  • I have an Apple Watch 5 and the man has the Apple Watch 3. For most of the functions you want the Apple Watch 3 GPS will be fine; unless you want to know what decibels the kid shrieks at.. You don’t need the cellular as long as you also carry your phone. You can answer your phone with the watch and either use Bluetooth headphones or Dick Tracey it.

The other thing to keep in mind is you need an Apple phone that supports the latest IOS to go with it, they aren’t standalone to setup.

If you aren’t sure then buy from Apple, you will have a couple of weeks to try it out. I think Costco would do similar and they are cheaper but the range is smaller.

The only real downside I can see with the Apple 3 is it will stop having IOS updates before the Apple 5 because it is older technology.

The new watches should be out in October but with COVID-19, who knows.

If you get the Activity app it will whine at you to keep your exercise up.

I really like mine, I get
    - SMS messages - send and receive
    - mail
    - exercise stats that are quite extensive
    - answer calls
    - weather
    - find my other half
    - the time

I hardly take my phone out of my bag now.

The downside is, probably, the battery. You will only get a day out of it so, if you want it for sleeping as well, I would put it on to charge whilst you shower and get ready.

My suggestion is, as I said, buy it from Apple, try it then work out if you want to keep it. If you do you can always return it and buy it cheaper elsewhere. Be aware, though, they are a tad addictive.

  • do ECG enabled now in apple watch? I heard it works only in US

As far as I know it isn’t there yet. I would wonder about its accuracy anyway. The expression “more guidelines” comes to mind.

      • so better just buy series 3

        • It is a tad “it depends”. Bang for buck the Apple Watch 3 is better value. Given what it does it is very good value. The big downside is needing the latest IOS phone.
          - You will get a couple more years out of the Apple Watch 5 before they shut off the IOS.
          - There is a border on the screen for the Apple Watch 3 so you get less screen real estate for the footprint.
          - It has “always on” for the screen for the 5.
          - the noise meter doesn't work for the 3.
          - the fall function isn’t on the 3.
          - less storage on the 3.

I got my Apple Watch 5 at a decent discount and we had Harvey Norman discount gift cards on top so I didn’t have to swallow as hard as I might for the Apple Watch 5. I don’t regret buying the Apple Watch 5 but i don’t think you miss out on much buying the Apple Watch 3. I’ve turned off the “always on” function on my Apple Watch 5 to save power. However, I learnt the hard way not to go to the low power options when exercising - this turns off the heart rate detection bit which meant it took a lot of effort to get my 30 minutes of exercise to register. My watch has, basically, replaced my phone unless I’m taking pictures, checking the location of the tram or my exercise stats. My phone, mostly, acts as a hotspot for my iPad and the backend engine for my watch.
