Can I Get a Refund on Travel Insurance if I Don’t Travel ?

I have a holiday booked that I expect to cancel due the coronavirus. I understand that I am not covered by travel insurance, but if I cancel the trip, can I cancel the insurance and get a refund? It is with TID and I am outside the cooling off period.

[insert comment asking what did TID say?]

I tried to call and they are extremely busy. I have emailed and not heard back. When I hear I will share it, but in the interim I thought someone could share their experience and there would be others in the same boat who are thinking the same as me.

Depends. Did you get travel insurance on your travel insurance?

I think it's actually technical name is travel insurance insurance.

  • My understanding was No (I was in similar situation last year) but given everything might be worth calling and asking.

I’d assume they have a cooling off period instead of a cancel before travel. It would be pointless if they had both.

  • Pretty sure if you cancel before you go they will refund you. That's the understanding I've had for all my dealings with os travel.

  • Probably not, but I have heard of some Insurances offering credit to put towards future travel insurance needs. OCuld be worth asking if you intend on going in the next 6 months instead.

  • Coverage starts when you purchase the policy, not just for the dates your overseas. eg. if you broke your hip in the lead up and could no longer go your cancellation costs would be covered. So it’s not unreasonable for the insurer to refuse a refund. It can’t hurt to ask the question though.

  • I contacted Insure and Go and the answer was no, not after the coolong off period. However as there is a Do not Travel warning I can claim on any out of pocket travel expenses, unfortunately the only out of pocket expense is my travel insurance , everything was refunded or credits.

  • I am traveling in April and rang my travel Insurer and they were happy to refund my policy. Money was refunded straight back in to my account. This was with world2cover.
Give your insurer a call it can't hurt to ask. You might even be able to get a credit if they won't refund
