Virgin Flight - BNE to LST. Worthwhile going for Creditcard Chargeback?

Hey all,

I have some flights booked on the 1st of April BNE to LST.

These flights have been "suspended" by Virgin Australia now. They are offering domestic credits which I'll need to call up for.

1) Since they have suspended, what's the chances that I'll get a refund?
2) If I don't get a refund, reckon its worthwhile going for a chargeback for services not delivered?

    1) Somewhere between 0 and 100%. Call 13 67 89 to find out.

    2) Sure, but note it can potentially get you barred from future purchases.

Just seems to be a prerecorded message that disconnects when it finishes.

I received an email from Virgin Australia regarding flights to Bali we had booked for May. Since all international flights are now cancelled it stated I would receive all the points back I used to book the flights and the portion that was paid with credit card will be refunded onto the credit card within 14 days. Not sure if yours is the same situation? I didn't bother contacting them as they made an announcement that they would contact people within the coming weeks.

Make sure you keep an eye on it and maybe stick a reminder in calendar to check in couple weeks. We were promised Aus GP ticket refunds within days but week later still nothing has come through.

      • Thanks for the heads up. Will keep an eye out.

    • Nice ~ useful ~ thanks unitato!

      Were these refundable tickets???

      • They were reward flights, so used 90,000 points to book and then paid the $400 difference. I know that if you change or cancel reward flights usually there is a penalty of about 7,000 points or $60 per person, but there was no mention of there being any penalty etc.

          thanks!

  • 1 - What do the T&C of the ticket fare say would happen in the flight was cancelled?

    2 - Not a chance.

    • 2 - Asked AMEX last night ~ they recommended it (after asking merchant first)

      • Of course AMEX would, they have nothing to lose and want to keep the 'customer' happy.

Virgin can/will respond to the chargeback request and AMEX may charge you for a failed chargeback.

well that's lame… (its my first time doing any chargeback)

What did you think? chargebacks are magical money based on honest?

You put a chargeback in, the credit card provider sends the retailer a request to respond to the chargeback, ie if you say product was not delivered etc, then they can respond and provide details if it was etc.

If they respond with the right things, the chargeback is denied and some credit cards charge you a fee for wasting their time.

In Virgins case, they will respond with your T&C from your fare, highlighting the terms for cancelled flights and provide details of the credit voucher issued.

Chargeback denied as the product you purchased was delivered.

            • @JimmyF: Chargeback denied as the product you purchased was delivered.

I purchased a flight (not a gift card)…. service was not delivered - lets hope it doesn't get to that point.

              https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/products-and-services/refund…

Consumers can request a chargeback from their card provider for a number of reasons, most commonly when:

they pay for products or services with a credit card, or select 'credit' on a debit card, and:
the products or services received are not as described

Your T&C from your fare, highlighting the terms for cancelled flights and provide details of the credit voucher issued.

This is akin to businesses with signs up saying "no refunds"

              • @blehgg:

I purchased a flight (not a gift card)

You purchased a product, which was a flight.

That product purchase came with T&C around refunds etc. Just like when I go to the supermarket and buy a product.

Lets say you missed the flight for some other reason, your purchased flight didn't happen then. Should you get a refund from virgin or chargeback? No as the T&C say no refund for missed flights.

The same T&C apply for cancelled flights etc. In this case they say no refund you get a credit with Virgin.

                  1. What happens if VA cancels or changes the timing of my flight prior to the day of travel?

If we need to change or cancel your flight prior to your travel date, we will either contact you or your travel agent will contact you using the contact details provided in your booking (which may be by phone, text or email) to advise you or your nominated booking contact of the change to your flight details.

If the new flight time is not suitable to you:

You can contact our Guest Contact Centre or your nominated travel agent to request a different flight time. We will use our best efforts to move you to another Virgin Australia service which is acceptable to you without charge.

If we cannot make suitable alternative arrangements, you may request a Travel Bank credit or a refund of the total price you paid for your impacted flight by contacting our Guest Contact Centre or your travel agent

                • @JimmyF: Thanks for the convo :) Triggered me to look up stuff as much as possible

It's nice having people who've done this before replying.

@blehgg: Well there you go, go request a refund. But if you already put in a chargeback, you have burnt that bridge.

If we cannot make suitable alternative arrangements, you may request a Travel Bank credit or a refund of the total price you paid for your impacted flight by contacting our Guest Contact Centre or your travel agent

Remember the keywords are **MAY*, they will advise they have offered you suitable alternative arrangements, ie a credit towards a future flight whenever that may be.

And yes I've done this before, but I just moved to a different flight, so wasn't the end of the world as I didn't need to get a refund.

  • I think you have to throw consumer law and the terms and conditions of sale out the window.
In these times there is no way the authorities are going to compel businesses to refund us. The government is panicking more about the economy than managing the spread of the virus.
Travel bank credit from Virgin is not ideal but it might be the only option.
At one point last week there was talk of the government buying a significant share in Virgin to keep them afloat. I seriously doubt they will be directed to refund passengers.
