Clearly Contacts Recall?

I recently had my specs which I bought from www.clearlycontacts.com.au checked by my optometrist (which were fine he said) and he told me that the contact lenses which they sell did not meet Australian standards. When I checked the site they have stopped selling contact lenses. I couldnt find any information about this online though.

Just wanted to let the community know about this as this company has been serving us well with free glasses for so long and we all buy from them.

Any chance a rep could clear this up for us?

  • Which contact lenses was that?

  • Looks like you can't order any of their contact lenses from them. I'm not sure if there is a specific one which had problems.

  • Do you know the name/brand of it?

  • Seems like you can't order anything but glasses anymore so I'm guessing it is a much bigger problem than just one or two brands. I was hoping their rep who posts bargains here would be able to shed some light.

Looks like they were not complying to Australian law. I wonder how that will impact on the group buying deal they had not so long ago on Spreets.

Sounds like the Harvey Norman excuse for getting parallel imports. Australian retailers pissed that another company is undercutting their prices. I buy my contacts from Visiondirect (US). If it's good enough for the US market then it should be fine for AUS.

Exactly. Except it is not the retailers complaining but the Therapeutic Goods Administration doing their job.

Then again, you can just buy overseas like you do. It all depends on whether you want to support Australian business or not.

        • I thought clearly contacts was Canadian, not Australian. If this is the case, then you are not really supporting an Australian business, just a business operating in Australia.

    • oh well, i guess i'll have to find another source

Luckily i bough a half years supply of contacts about 2 weeks ago

I always bought from the US site (coastal contacts or something) because it always ended up being cheaper and they all came from the same place. They can't retail from a .com.au domain? Who cares? I'll buy my FDA approved contacts at 1/3 the price, the Australian standards can go to hell.

    • I can get the exact brand of contact lenses that my optometrist recommends at almost half the price from Clearly Contacts, which means less out-of-pocket expense when claiming from my private health insurance provider, which only allows a maximum of $200 a year. (I managed to claim a purchase from Clearly Contacts from Medibank Private this month without problems).

I don't really see why I wouldn't choose to buy from clearlycontacts given the extreme price difference for the same thing….not a fan of being ripped off. The brands I've used in the past are usually made in US anyway.

As camcollins commented below, Clearly Contacts is selling contact lenses again.

    Hi everyone,

my name is Sean and I work for Clearly Contacts and I am happy to respond to your questions.

Clearly Contacts has been serving Australians with quality contact lens products for over five years. The products we provide are the same as those you would purchase from any optical store, but at a more competitive price.

It is our mission to provide you with low cost vision care, and we never compromise on health or safety. All of our products are certified and fully backed by manufacturers.

We are currently working to increase our service to all Australians. Our contact lens service will be back up and running soon!

In the mean time, stay tuned for (yet) another free glasses day tomorrow :)

    • This site should clear it up…

Looks like they have more problems than they are letting on.

      • Hi Sean, thanks for replying. Can you confirm that Clearly Contacts did not have any problems with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)? If not, why were your contact lenses not selling for the past week or so?

It seems like your sales blurb and redirecting our attention with free glasses is, as riparian mentioned, hiding something.

Well the contacts look to be back online now.

    • The site is totally offline today. Can't even buy specs.

      Edit: Actually, back up now.
