Google Chromecast (2nd Gen) with Xiaomi Mi Repeater 2

Hi Ozbargain,

I'm having issues with getting the Google Chromecast (2nd Gen) to connect properly with the Xiaomi Mi Repeater 2.

The router is currently sitting on one end of the house (front) and the furthest the range goes is towards the kitchen (near back of the house) but does not extend to the garage (old non-smart television that the Chromecast is to be).

So that is why I am using the Xiaomi Mi Repeater 2 to extend the wifi.
I have successfully set up the repeater just fine and I can use the wifi in the garage with full bars no problems. AWESOME.

However during the process of setting the google chromecast following prompts connecting the chromecast to the repeater wifi it comes up with all sorts of errors.
My technical knowledge I would like to believe are average at best. I know how to log into the router (Sagemcom F@st 3864 AC - supplied by OPTUS) and understand some computer terms for understanding how to fix this.

I would like to know if anyone has successfully managed to get this setup to work?
I've tried troubleshooting with the repeater settings with making the wifi coming up as its own SSID connection and also there's an option for it to be the same as the router's SSID but both ways don't seem to work.

If the Xiaomi Mi Repeater 2 is not compatible with the Chromecast what are other options? (Cheapest)
Note its not viable to run ethernet cables into the walls or around the house so a wireless power outlet wifi extender is my best option

  • Do you have any special characters in the SSID? Sometimes that can cause problems.

  • I have an underscore from the default username that Optus gave and if the option in Mi App was to become a different SSID there's an "_plus" added on to the original SSID

I can modify the name to see if it does anything

    • EDIT didn't work :(

  • UPDATE: Following the post here did the trick happy days but I ended up ditching the xiaomi repeater and used an older router to act as an access point

It goes main router —-(wireless)—> old router using WPS —(wireless)—> chromecast
Chromecast actually managed to successfully connect without any hiccups and streaming wise no buffering

    • Glad to hear you found a solution. That should give you a better result also.
