Spare Space in a Sydney Rack? and IPs - Looking to Rent

Hey, I’m looking to collocate about 5 appliances, but colocation fees are pretty steep when your starting out. Also can not afford the yearly APNIC fees for a /24 at this point. Looking for an alternative. Any suggestions?

Is WOT a acronym for or just “deliberately” bad choice of grammar?

colocation fees are pretty steep when your starting out.

Probably shouldn’t have a go at others based on grammar when you couldn’t get it right yourself…

        • I was being serious about the acronym statement.

As for my “your” and “you’re” mistake, I own that…. I often dictate to my phone and it’s my mistake for not checking it.

          • @teek82: Oh, right ok. Sorry, it wasn’t capitalised so I didn’t see why you thought it would have been an acronym without having a go at them.

What prices are you seeing so far?

Power/cooling and all the other things needed to provide you a secure space are not cheap.

    • About an average of $80 per RU per month.

I was hoping to to maybe find someone that has spare rack space that I could lease short term.

  • A pretty big alternative is AWS?

    • AWS & Google Cloud are super expensive and I was hoping to use existing hardware that I have.

      • expensive if you approach them from an "I want to run code in several big virtual machines" perspective, cheap if you do it correctly i.e. migrate to serverless architecture.

That said I know it's a big time sink + a lot to learn in order to do that.

        • I have some exposure to AWS but I’ve always found it to be exponentially difficult to configure as well. With some limitations as to what can be run (limitations are not the deal breaker).

Any good references as to where I could learn more on AWS?

          • @teek82: AWS's own getting started is great, their documentation is highly detailed and covers everything you could want.

            https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/

I think the main difficulty is the mental block in migrating from a "Machines in a data center" or "Cloud" (ie somebody elses computer) to a full serverless setup.

            • @zigzagoonmemes: I find I get very confused about licensing and also which is the most cost effective service. I’ll definitely check it out as an alternative.

            • @zigzagoonmemes: Spose it will give me something to do during lockdown.

At OzBargain we got most of our servers with BinaryLane — a cheaper alternative to AWS. Without all the functionalities just plain old KVM VPS. They are cheap if you want to keep a few services online and don't want the trouble of learning AWS or GCloud.

    • BinaryLane are good from my understanding.

I personally have about 4 domains about 10 email mailboxes (who knows how many alias). I’m currently hosting them on a reseller account which is okay for the moment, but I prefer to have full ssh access. And i hâte relying on cPanel email, not functional enough so I’m thinking of running my own exchange as well. Lots of thoughts, but no definitive action.

Under the reseller account I have another 5 websites as well (friends) so I think it might be time for an upgrade.

      • Maybe you were talking about a different service?

BinaryLane only sells VPS with root access, from $4/month with 1GB RAM, 20GB SSD & 1000GB data, and servers can be deployed in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney.

        • Yes, my reseller account is with Hostmantis.

But BinaryLane appear to have a good alternative. I just then need to pay licensing fees. Which will triple my current monthly spend, but allow much more versatility.

  • I have mine at home. Login to a VPS outside with autossh and forward some ports, use GatewayPorts in sshd to enable it.

  • hello mate, please pm me in regards to the previous deal we have made as i have paid $200 deposit half a year ago, but it was not fulfilled due to covid-19 thanks. I have tired to pm you couples of times but was no reply,
